Even before any disaster or crisis hits, food security can be a significant issue for ALICE®  (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those in poverty. ALICE was already navigating life without a safety net and was one crisis away from financial despair. The government shutdown and suspension of SNAP (food assistance) benefits is that crisis, creating a significant increase in food insecurity while pantries are already at capacity and experiencing shortages.

In response to this impact of the SNAP emergency, United Way is taking action and encouraging people and groups to collect needed items for local food banks/pantries. While Foodstock is a year-round project, we are strongly promoting its expansion during this critical timeframe, given the critical need right now.  This will help ensure ALICE and poverty-level households have enough food while the SNAP program is on hold. 

How to Help

This is the perfect volunteer activity for any team or group!  Come together to create Disaster Preparedness kits for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and individuals at risk (e.g. seniors, adults with disabilities, etc.).

Volunteers will pack drawstring backpacks with some key essentials to help families and individuals be better prepared for a disaster.  Items include:

- blanket or tied pillow

- small flashlight

- extra batteries

- a contact list with key information

- non-perishable snack items

- a bottle of water

- water treatment packets 

- a whistle 

- personal care items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap)

- small first aid kit

- colored pencils

- mandalas coloring book

We will coordinate with your team to arrange for supplies for your assembly project.  Ideally, we would like this done during September, which is National Disaster Preparedness month.

Kindergarten is the start of a formal school environment for many children.  United Way, as part of our United In Care program, encourages school-readiness and early literacy.  Through this effort, we would like each child at one of our many partner preschools to get a card or letter of encouragement that creates excitement about entering kindergarten.

Volunteering for this project is easy and can be done by ANYONE!  Simply make a card or write a short note of support and encouragement for a new kindergartener.  You can include a favorite memory about your own kindergarten experience or perhaps the titles of your favorite children's books.  Please send your card/letter to United Way of Northern New Jersey at P.O. This project can be done by a family, an individual, a Girl Scout or Boy Scout troop, service club or any other type of group.  Sign up TODAY and start making a nice card to encourage continued learning for children entering kindergarten.

Senior Shopper. Make a difference by becoming a volunteer for isolated and vulnerable seniors seeking to continue to maintain independent living. The Senior Shopper Program volunteers deliver groceries to home-bound seniors who have been referred to JFS by the Somerset County Office on Aging.

Family Mentor Program.

Use your life experience!  Social workers make in home assessments of families requesting these services, and volunteers are matched based on their time needs and requirements geographically; and the nature of the goals the family wants to work on. The geographic area served is all of Somerset County NJ.

The Senior Friendly Visitor Program is designed to provide in-home support, information, and advocacy to Somerset County families and frail, isolated seniors in Somerset or Hunterdon counties. Volunteers will receive training and support from staff in their activities.

Middle Earth is looking for volunteer individuals and small groups to share their skills, interests and expertise.  Topics can include career exploration, mock interviews, particular skills and hobbies that volunteers would like to share.

Are you available once a week between 9:30-4:30 for 2- 3 hours?  Our incredible office staff need steady help with recurring tasks.  Computer literacy a must. We are a friendly bunch and we have snacks!

Make a difference in the life of a grieving child - become a volunteer! Our programs are free of charge and are offered to children ages 7-17.

Comfort Zone is a lot like regular camp! It’s fun. It has all the traditional parts of camp-archery, arts & crafts, canoeing, bonfires, s’mores and more! A unique part of Comfort Zone is that we also work to help kids with their grief. You don’t need to have experienced a loss or have any clinical background.

During this four-hour volunteer training session, you will meet Comfort Zone staff, campers, and volunteers who will explain what to expect at camp and how our program impacts grieving children and teens. You will receive education about childhood bereavement and we’ll give you tips on how to be successful in whichever volunteer role you are selected to fill.

Discovering the wonder of how something works can be the spark that ignites a child’s enthusiasm for learning. The world of science provides unlimited potential.  In the time it takes to have lunch, employees can create a STEM kit and help light that spark in a child’s imagination!

A STEM kit is comprised of a book, supplemental materials and all of the items necessary to complete an age appropriate science experiment.  STEM kits give teachers, child care workers and parents ready-to-use tools to unlock the possibilities for a child’s future in science, math and related fields.

This is a fun and interesting team-building project and has a long-term positive impact for children in our community.

Stein Hospice patients are often bed or chair bound and in need of companionship.  If you have a big heart and want to bring joy into someone's life, volunteer to visit a patient on a weekly basis.  

Home Friends is a visitor program for older adults or people with limiting health conditions. This program was created in 1987 in response to a growing need for companionship and support for home-based older adults in Princeton and nearby communities.

Volunteers can do a variety of things during weekly home visits such as: walk together, read and sort mail, exchange stories about life experiences, or pursue mutually shared interests. Some volunteers bring library books, share a movie, help with technology, or work in the garden together.

Home Friends was designed to complement and support, rather than replace, the role of family and paid caregivers.

Once matched with an older adult, we ask that you meet at least one hour a week to build a good relationship that the person can rely on. 

Those who are bilingual or multilingual are greatly encouraged to apply. This opportunity is best suited for individuals over 40 years old and those with flexibility during the work week.

Becoming a peer support group facilitator at Good Grief is a unique, engaging, and transformative volunteer experience. Facilitators at Good Grief help to create a safe and empathic environment for grieving families after the death of a loved one by helping foster resiliency and develop healthy coping skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives. 

Good Grief is a national leader in delivering childhood bereavement services. Since its founding in 2004, the mission of Good Grief has been to build resilience in children, strengthen families, and empower communities to grow from loss and adversity.

This spring is the perfect time to take action to assist ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families who work hard in our community, but who struggle financially and are one crisis or emergency away from falling into poverty.

As part of this year's National Volunteer Month (April) and to promote volunteerism that has a direct impact in our community, United Way of Northern New Jersey is offering a volunteer project to assist families with critical essential items for their well-being.

Volunteers are asked to create Care Kits that include any (or all) of the following essential needs for families:

* Shampoo/Conditioner

* Soap

* Deodorant

* Toothpaste/Toothbrushes

* Feminine Hygiene products

* Home cleaning products (paper towels, dish soap, household cleaner, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.)

Items can be full-size or travel-size (which works better in shelter or transitional housing situations) and can be packed in Ziplock types of bags or in any type of reusable bags.

Another option for volunteers is to create a Baby Care Kit - which would include any type of baby care items such as:  diapers, wipes, baby shampoo and baby wash, towels, bottles, clothes, powder formula, toys and anything else that would be helpful for new parents in need.

We are aiming to have the Care Kits ready for distribution to our ALICE clients and those of our partner nonprofit organizations by Friday, April 28, 2023, but we can accept the Care Kits any time this spring.

Stein Hospice cares for patients suffering a life limiting illness. A hospice patient often becomes house or room bound. Simply by walking in the door, you can bring a smile to their face.  By visiting regularly, you can build a relationship that can be life changing for you and the patient. Join our caring Team by offering compassionate attention to our patients.  Training is provided.

Stein Hospice is a nonprofit hospice providing comfort care to terminally ill patients, in Union, Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Monmouth and Mercer counties.  Our volunteers become part of our amazing Team of caregivers, including nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains and therapists. Together we bring loving attention to the bedside of the patient and in support of their families and caregivers. Volunteers provide nonmedical support to patients and their families by becoming a steady visitor. Join us in our mission driven work to give the best possible care to patients at the end of life!

Stein Hospice patients are mostly house and room bound and your presence can bring an instant smile to their face. We are looking for someone who can drive and deliver birthday and holiday gift bags.  Make your own schedule!

Join us in identifying, evaluating and interviewing prospective Habitat homeowners. Help conduct

information/orientation sessions, review applications, need for housing and other qualifications to become

a Habitat homeowner. Support current Habitat homeowners by conducting formal and informal surveys,

communicating valuable information in newsletters, responding to inquires and referring them to

appropriate resources in the community. Volunteers come from all backgrounds, such as banking, law and

real estate. Raritan Valley Habitat is seeking a chairperson to work with the staff Homeowner Services Manager and this team.

Come out regularly on Wednesdays and Thursdays and be a part of the weekday home construction and

repair crew. This team helps with weekly construction work, shares ideas to benefit construction projects

and helps recruit new team members. No experience necessary. We are able to train if you are handy and

have worked on DIY home projects or no experience at all. Volunteers must reside in Somerset or Hunterdon County.

Raritan Valley Habitat is seeking a chairperson to work with the staff Community Outreach manager as well as recruit additional volunteers to be ambassadors for Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity in the community!

Crossroads4Hope is currently recruiting for a Board Treasurer to succeed the current incumbent's planned rotation. 

Purpose

Ensures Crossroads4Hope (CR4H) is good steward of charitable donations and its tax-exempt status, providing oversight of the organization's fiscal integrity and assisting the Board of Trustees in meeting its mandate to govern. Ultimately, while financial management is the primary focus of the Treasurer, the entire board shares the responsibility of financial oversight and accountability.

Responsibilities

Maintains knowledge of CR4H’s holdings and assets, financial reports and important financial ratios. Monthly, reviews account records, and monitor income and expenditures. Keeps the board apprised of key financial events, trends, and concerns, and their assessment of the organization’s fiscal health.

Effectively translates financial concepts and information for trustees who do not have financial backgrounds or substantial financial experience. Facilitates the board’s strategic thinking about the short and long-term financial viability of the organization aligned to the advancement of the organization’s mission.

Acts as chair of the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee ensures the organization is operating with the financial resources needed to provide programs and services to the community. The committee provides financial analysis, advice, and oversight and monitoring of the organizations budget, fiscal policies, procedures, investments etc.  

Oversees the annual budget and approval process. Annually, the CEO prepares the budget in conjunction with key staff. This position facilitates engagement of the finance and executive committees and timely approval by the Board of Trustees. 

Regularly reviews financial reports generated by staff on a monthly basis. In the absence of staff, generates required reports.

May prepare or guide staff to prepare additional board reports detailing income, expenditures, and asset values to present to the board no less frequently than quarterly. If needed, prepares special financial reports as required to support business cases for proposed plans for large expenditures.

Provides oversight of the preparation of the organization’s IRS Form 990 to the conjunction with the CEO and preparer. Ensures accuracy and on-time completion; annually presents to the board the results in a timely fashion.

Other Education and Experience Required

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics or accounting or related field.

3+ years of experience in business, finance, economics or accounting. Experience as CFO is preferred. Treasurer experience on a non-profit board is a plus.  

Adheres to high standards of ethics and compliance in fulfilling all responsibilities to the organization. Performs all duties incident to the office of the Treasurer, and such other duties as may be required by law, by the Articles of Incorporation, or By Laws, or which may be assigned from time to time by the Board of Trustees.

Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey is looking for volunteers in Somerset County to lead or assist with troops, pitch in at the community level, help with events and much more. Parents often get involved in Girl Scouting with their daughters, but Girl Scout volunteers come from all walks of life and backgrounds: college students, busy professionals, and young-at-heart retirees. If you only have an hour a month to volunteer or 3-4 hours a weeks, we have a volunteer position that is just right for you!

There are several levels of Membership at MEMS.  Membership is open to those living or working in Montgomery Township NJ. An EMT rides on the ambulance - Perform Basic Life Support (BLS) An EMT candidate undergoes at least 200 hours at a local training center of training to become an EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician - Basic) certified by the NJ State Department of Health.  We would arrange for training.

Driver - Members who serve as Ambulance Drivers

To become a Driver you must live or work in Montgomery NJ and:

* Be at least 21 years old
* Hold a Valid Drivers License
* Have an Acceptable Driving Record (per squad’s insurance underwriter)
* Completed a Squad Approved Driver Training Program
* Have CPR to the level of Professional Rescuer

Associate - Members who provide support services

Associate members shall be individuals living or working in Montgomery Township NJ,  who have an interest in serving, but are not qualified or do not wish to be active members (EMTs) or drivers. Associate members assist the squad by helping with the planning or support aspects of the squad.  

Visions and Pathways, a nonprofit agency that provides a home and a hopeful future for homeless youth is looking for volunteer groups for our organization.

HOPES CAP works with many children and struggling families in our community.  To help ease the burden of our families, we need donations of specific items.  Needed items include:

-Personal Care items (e.g. shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, razors & shaving cream, etc.)

-Seasonal children's clothing and coats

-Toys and children's books

-Baby care items such as diapers, wipes, baby clothes, blankets, etc.

-Small household items (e.g. coffee maker, vacuum, sheets, towels, etc.)

-Non-perishable food items

-Gift cards

Any donations will help our struggling families, who are working hard to regain their financial stability.

Do you like working with young children?  Do you have some extra time during the day?  We have just the volunteer opportunity for you! 

HOPES CAP is looking for some volunteers to assist teachers in classrooms working with preschool age children.  Help with activities, read to the children and help with snacks and lunch.

Volunteers must pass a background check.  Ready to add some fun into your life - contact us with your interest.

Volunteers are sought to assist us and provide some expertise with special events, particularly those for fundraising and "friend" raising.  We need some assistance with event management and planning.

Volunteers with some affinity for fun are also needed for activities such as face-painting, monitoring bounce house and acting as a tour guide.  This is a great way to meet new people, have a fun time at a worthwhile event and help a critically needed organization.

Volunteer teams are needed to assist with outdoor clean up around both centers located in Franklin Township (Somerset).  Raking, planting, debris removal, mulching are all needed to spruce up the outside of our program facilities to enhance the experience for our clients and our students.

The following donation types are being sought to assist the teens and young adults served by Visions & Pathways:

- diapers and other baby care items

- gift cards (general stores, grocery stores and gas)

Volunteers are needed to become members of the Visions & Pathways Event Committee and assist with various fund raising and "friend"raising events.  This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to

This is a great way to help a local organization that supports at-risk youth transition successfully into adulthood, while participating in a wonderful team-building experience.

Volunteers are needed to conduct a supply drive for the Food Bank's Weekend Backpack program, which provides critical food for children in need.

The project entails purchasing (or getting donated) the specific items for the backpack bags along with the large zipper lock plastic bags that are used to send the food package home with the children in the program.

Second Chance for Animals is made up entirely of volunteers, so we are always in need of new individuals who are willing to step up and join us. As a volunteer, you have the opportunity to have a meaningful impact on improving the lives of the animals living in the Franklin Township Animal Shelter, whether you choose to volunteer directly with the animals or to help with events and fundraising.

New volunteers must go through an orientation and must attend additional training before working with the dogs. The goal of the Middle Earth Visions is to prepare youth to enter the workforce and begin a fulfilling career. Along with career readiness training, we also provide our students with an industry recognized credential, as well as a short-term internship in a field that interests them. A crucial part of this process is the mock interview, in which the participant takes part in an interview with a professional in order to practice their interview skills and receive feedback. We are looking for volunteers to serve as mock interviewers, and are accepting professionals from a variety of different careers so that each of our program participants may be able to interview with a career professional that can relate to their interests.

GOTR volunteer coaches do not have to be runners themselves; the only requirement is that they be enthusiastic and committed to the healthy development of girls in grades 3-8. Groups meet twice a week for 75 minutes for 10 weeks. Coaches receive training and are provided detailed lesson plans as well as all the materials and guidance needed to implement GOTR. You just need to bring your energy and enthusiasm.

Opportunities are available in Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

The goal of the Middle Earth Youth College Readiness program is to not only ensure that students improve their academic performance, but also realize that they are able to make post-secondary education a reality. YCR students learn about managing time, managing money, and the importance of their high school grades along with learning about college applications and college life. Due to the fact that we stress the importance of academic achievement, as well as the importance of standardized tests such as the SAT, we aim to provide some level of tutoring for our students, and our looking for individuals willing to volunteer in this role. Tutoring in a broad range of topics, including SAT and PSAT tutoring, is essential to the success of the YCR program.

Support clients who are building skills needed to live independently; assist with job preparation, credit counseling, budgeting, learning English as a second language, furthering education and resume writing.

Guide victims of domestic violence through the complicated legal system. Prepare clients for courtroom experience and support client during the court process. No legal experience necessary.

Program volunteers are vital to our program and always needed.  We are looking for individuals to help us once or twice per week, Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Duties include:

We are looking for people willing to crochet, knit, quilt, or sew lap blankets for patients on hospice.  Handmade blankets bring comfort, warmth, and emotional support to those who receive them.  Feel free to create a lap sized blanket 4'X5' using yarn color or material and pattern of your choosing.  Our patients will truly benefit from your caring labor of love!

Good As New Re-sale Shop Volunteers

Good As New is a nonprofit resale shop located in downtown Somerville NJ benefiting the comprehensive programs at Zufall Health Center of Somerville (formerly Women's Health & Counseling Center). We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to contribute to its success. Volunteers are needed for Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.  Saturday volunteers are particularly needed.

Shop Manager – Bring your leadership and organizational skills to our retail venture.

Shop Co-Manager – Support the Manager in the daily operations of the shop and scheduling of volunteers.

Shop Associate – Volunteer in the shop one day a week each month to sort donations, price, re-stock inventory, merchandise and help customers.
