Agency: Share My Meals Every year in New Jersey, 341,000 tons of prepared food goes to waste, while 994,800 New Jersey residents don’t have enough food to eat. Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to local nonprofits that support individuals in need. About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to pick up meal donations from Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm and deliver them to a soup kitchen in Asbury Park (~15 minute drive). We are looking to build a community of volunteers who would be willing to support this route on a regular basis starting as soon as possible. In order to adhere to food safety guidelines, Share My Meals provides all necessary equipment (i.e. insulated bags) to transport food donations safely and requires volunteers to track pick-up and delivery route start and end times using our smart phone app. Please note: food pickup and delivery requires heavy lifting. BILINGUAL volunteers needed to advocate for children in foster careIn approximately 15 hours per month, you can make a difference in a child's life as a volunteer BILINGUAL advocate. More than fifty percent of children in the Passaic and Union County foster care system identify as Latinx. Unfortunately, there is a serious shortage of Bilingual English/Spanish volunteers to advocate for their rights. When a child enters foster care, he or she is assigned a dedicated, trained Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer from the CASA of Passaic and Union County Program. The child’s advocate ensures that their individual needs remain a priority while they move through the child welfare system and the family court. CASAs work one-on-one with the abused or neglected child, gathering information from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers in order to make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. No experience or formal education is needed! Join CASA of Passaic and Union as a BILINGUAL advocate, and change a child's life! Training begins in October, so contact Sara Torres at sara@casapassaicunion.org ASAP to get started or visit our website to register for an information session as your first step! https://www.casapassaicunion.org/info-session Agency: Passaic County CASA In approximately 15 hours per month, you can make a difference in a child's life as a volunteer BILINGUAL advocate. Volunteer: Be a friend to an older adult in the Princeton areaHome Friends is a visitor program for older adults or people with limiting health conditions. This program was created in 1987 in response to a growing need for companionship and support for home-based older adults in Princeton and nearby communities. Volunteers can do a variety of things during weekly home visits such as: walk together, read and sort mail, exchange stories about life experiences, or pursue mutually shared interests. Some volunteers bring library books, share a movie, help with technology, or work in the garden together. Home Friends was designed to complement and support, rather than replace, the role of family and paid caregivers. Once matched with an older adult, we ask that you meet at least one hour a week to build a good relationship that the person can rely on. Those who are bilingual or multilingual are greatly encouraged to apply. This opportunity is best suited for individuals over 40 years old and those with flexibility during the work week. About YPIE
Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) partners with students to ensure they are ready for, enroll in, and complete college. We confront the challenges of low-income, urban school districts by providing families with equitable access to the critical tools and services necessary for college success. Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) was founded in 2007 to bring innovative solutions to the historically under-resourced Yonkers Public Schools. Initially providing college support to 12th grade Yonkers students, YPIE expanded its model to include College Readiness, College Access, and College Persistence programming, serving 1,200 students each year from 9th grade through college. In fall 2023, YPIE introduced YPIE Jersey City, replicating its college success model for public school students in Jersey City. YPIE has put a college degree within reach for thousands of students. Our work with students and families is a partnership. We make a commitment to students to ensure we do everything we can to support them on a journey to college success.
