Bergen Volunteers’ Mentoring program provides individuals with one-on-one support. Our staff and volunteers help mentees learn about the resources available within the community while tapping into their strengths to identify and strive towards specific personal improvement goals.

Our long-term mentoring program runs for 18 months and matches volunteers with:

Volunteers enrolled in our long-term program must be at least 21 years old, complete an interview and criminal background check ($17), as well as attend our training session. Ideal candidates are great listeners, non-judgmental, resourceful, and have a generous heart. During the 18 month commitment period, volunteers are expected to meet with their mentees twice per month for 2 hours each get-together.

We’re currently seeking female mentors to provide encouragement and guidance to moms who need a little extra support. Your kindness and wisdom can change lives.

Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to individuals in need.

About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to help with our donation receiving operations in Princeton on Fridays from 2:00 to 4:30pm.This is a hands-on way to help make sure donated meals are received, sorted, and ready to be shared with our community.

What you’ll do:

Organize and sort incoming meal donations

Assist with keeping our Hub tidy and efficient

Be available for occasional local meal donation pick-ups (car required)

Volunteers should expect to lift and carry full bags and trays of food. Fridays are our busiest donation day, so volunteers should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to take initiative with minimal direction.

In order to adhere to food safety guidelines, Share My Meals provides all necessary equipment (i.e. insulated bags) to transport food donations safely and requires volunteers to track pick-up and delivery route start and end times using our smart phone app.

Volunteer Requirements:

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.  Parents may volunteer with their children.

Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license.

Volunteers must provide their own transportation and have the necessary auto insurance (minimum of $300,000 Single Limit or $100,000/$300,000 Split Limit auto liability limits).

Volunteers must have a smartphone with the ability to download our food donation tracking app.

Volunteers must complete Share My Meals onboarding and training before volunteering.

For the mechanically inclined and handy person, volunteers work as part of a team to restore and maintain aircrafts, displays, and general maintenance work on the museum property and facility itself.

Currently, in need of help fixing the interior roof and ceiling tiles. 

Women's Rights is looking for a few volunteers to work Monday – Friday from 9-1 and 1- 5. The same volunteer will not work all week. Tasks would include answering phones, routing calls, and greeting folks who come to the door. Volunteers must speak both English and Spanish.

Celebrating over 40 years, CHORE volunteers perform minor household repairs for the senior and disabled residents of Bergen County, allowing them to age safely in their own homes.

What will you do? Perform minor indoor safety repairs such as installing grab bars, changing light bulbs, minor electrical/plumbing, etc.

Hours: One day a week (Monday - Friday) between the hours of 8:30 am - 2:00 pm (seasonal volunteers are also welcome)

Requirements:

This is a wonderful opportunity for recent retirees who are looking to give back to the community. It is also an excellent learning experience for college students learning trades such as physical therapy, engineering, electrical, etc. as it gets them inside the homes of local residents with common, everyday issues.  If you need to perform service for court-mandated hours, we may be able to use you.

Experience or inexperienced, we offer on the job training and are happy to accept anyone who can commit to at least one day a week.

The gardens at Flat Rock Brook were created by our volunteer gardeners. It is an ongoing project and everyone is welcome to join this group regardless of experience. Volunteer gardeners work on plantings, upkeep, maintenance and care of our gardens with a special emphasis on our Native Habitat and Butterfly Gardens. We use integrated pest management gardening techniques and plant natives to attract beneficial insects and other wildlife.

These Rangers will help the education staff facilitate public and private programming including field trips, weekend public programs, and birthday parties. Please note that most of our public programming occurs on Sunday afternoons. Experienced Jr. Rangers will also be permitted to conduct storytimes and small craft projects if they feel comfortable doing so.

Jr. Rangers will be required to attend an Educational Training Day in April. Staff will always be present and available while these young volunteers are present and they are not to leave the Nature Center alone without permission from a staff member first.

Age 12-14

Volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours per season (spring, summer, fall) for a minimum total of 6 hours per calendar year.

Flat Rock Brook hosts several annual events. Our annual Recognition Dinner honors outstanding individuals and companies. The Great Fall Festival brings hundreds of families to the Nature Center for outdoor fun. We seek individuals to assist with a variety of efforts to help ensure our success at these events.

There are no specific requirements for becoming a special event volunteer; however, as events come closer, there will be specific jobs that need to be filled.

When families roll up their sleeves and participate in meaningful service projects, they quickly learn that they can make a difference in creating a better community– and a better world. We’ve put this tool kit together for instances in which your family can’t make it to Family Volunteer Day (Fall event), want to participate from home for Family Day of Service (Spring event), or when you simply want to get the family together to do some good. We are seeking Russian-speaking telephone callers to help with socializing Russian-speaking clients. Volunteers will enjoy a one-on-one relationship with one of our homebound and lonely senior clients, helping to alleviate loneliness and isolation with important human contact and encouraging them to socialize. Volunteers provide companionship once or twice a week for approximately 15-20 minutes per call, helping to improve the quality of life of the individual.

Dementia-Friendly Movie Matinee Volunteers

North Jersey Villages is sponsoring a series of afternoon theater events for people experiencing dementia and their caregivers. The upcoming events are scheduled at 12:30 PM on Wednesdays, September 10 and October 8 at the Hawthorne Theater and November 12 at the Westwood Theater.

We are looking for 5 to 6 volunteers to work with us for 4 hours to assist our guests with snacks, seating, and information when they arrive at the theater. To support a positive volunteer experience, all volunteers are expected to attend a half-hour training on Zoom before day of event as well as a brief training and a tour of the library auditorium one half hour prior to the event.

Many area youths do not have access to books when they can’t go to school or the library. Help bring literature to them by reading a book and submitting a virtual storytime to us! 

We will be posting the videos on YouTube and area youth will have access to those recordings. To complete this project, you only need an age-appropriate book from Kindergarten-5th Grade and a way to record video (phone, computer, or another recording device).

Family Mentor Program.

Use your life experience!  Social workers make in home assessments of families requesting these services, and volunteers are matched based on their time needs and requirements geographically; and the nature of the goals the family wants to work on. The geographic area served is all of Somerset County NJ.

What you'll do as a Mentor Coach:
As a volunteer Mentor Coach, you will work one-on-one with one of our Fellows through their entire two-year journey through our program, attending career development workshops and bringing our best-in-class curriculum to life with your real-world experiences and industry insight. Workshops include trainings by our expert staff, hands-on activities to practice new skills, panels and presentations, leadership opportunities and group discussions.

Program Schedule:
As a Mentor Coach, you will support your Fellow by attending monthly, 3-hour Saturday workshops from 9:30am-12:30pm.

Year 1: In-person Saturday workshops from Sept-April (once a month)
Year 2: A flexible, hybrid model that makes it easier to stay engaged while supporting your Fellow.

Healing the Children New Jersey's Medical Teams Abroad Program is seeking volunteer OR nurses, anesthesiologists, and CRNAS to join our upcoming surgical mission trips in 2026 to the Dominican Republic.  Consisting of 20 professionals from New Jersey's medical community, the team will provide free surgical care to children born with congenital abnormalities.

HTCNJ is a non-profit, established in 1981, that has helped over 40,000 children both locally and globally.

We are seeking Russian-speaking volunteers to help with socializing with Russian-speaking clients.

Our socialization programs are designed to provide socialization to homebound, isolated seniors who may not otherwise receive many visits or have personal interaction. Friendly Visitors go to the client’s home, usually once a week for about an hour, during daytime hours, and spend time chatting with the client, or sometimes doing other activities like playing games or playing a musical instrument.  Telephone callers usually call twice per week for around 15-20 minutes or longer.

Ambassadors (Mission Messengers) help spread the word in the community about CASA and the work our amazing volunteers are doing. As an Ambassador, you will host and fill a private Snapshot event with ten or more guests who you think might want to learn more about CASA. Volunteers must have a smartphone with the ability to download our food donation tracking app.

Every year Katie's House collects toys, games and gift cards (no stuffed animals please) to be given to children in the hospital with cancer.  The toys are given out at their holiday party and extras are used during the year for special occasions like birthdays or just to brighten up a bad day.

Friendly Visits

Simply put, these volunteers visit with our residents. Walk with a resident around the premises. Talk about politics, current events, the theater, or books. Play trivia, Scrabble, cards, or a board game. Host bingo. Bring your favorite aromatherapy oils to share. Paint our female residents' nails. If you can think of it, chances are our residents will enjoy it!

Volunteer to Help Beautify Our Gardens

By volunteering your time to assist with gardening, planting flowers, trimming shrubs, and maintaining our outdoor spaces, you'll play a vital role in keeping our gardens beautiful all year round.

The Friendly Visitor program is designed to provide socialization to homebound, isolated older adults who may not otherwise receive many visits or have much contact with people outside of the care provided to them. Friendly Visitors visit the client’s home, once a week, during weekdays, for at least an hour, to spend time conversing or engaging with the client in other activities like playing games or a musical instrument.

Program Overview: Our Kosher Meals on Wheels program is a lifeline for seniors and individuals with disabilities throughout Bergen and Passaic Counties. In addition to receiving seven nutritionally balanced meals weekly, volunteers also deliver vital human contact and conversation, while also taking the opportunity to check on a senior’s health status and conditions in their home. Drivers pick up the meals in Teaneck and deliver the meals to up to five clients. Routes are available throughout Bergen County and take into consideration the location of the volunteer's home. We have an increased need for drivers in Ft. Lee.

Time Commitment: Approx. 1-3 hours once per week during the day.

Qualifications:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. Must have a clean driving record and car insurance.

RAISE (Recognizing Abilities & Inclusion of Special Employees) is a nine-month work and social skills training program that offers part-time jobs to adults with developmental disabilities. We are seeking volunteers to act as RAISE Job Coaches for three hours per week. (Training will be provided.) Volunteers must be physically able to help with basic work tasks.

Community Outreach Volunteer - Responsible for aiding program with reaching out to the community by attending community meetings/events, canvasing community areas, and assisting Coordinator with partnership development.
 
General/Daily Operations Volunteer - Responsible for general tasks within and around the center. Provides staff with assistance preparing for workshops, events, and activities. Also, to aid with overall organization of the center.
 
Family Engagement Volunteer - Responsible for assisting Family Partner staff members with family engagement and creating a comfortable atmosphere for all participants entering the center.

The Family Success Centers are community-based, family-centered neighborhood gathering places where residents can go for family support, information, and services. We offer fun activities, informational workshops, and opportunities to learn and grow for people of all ages!

United Way of Northern New Jersey is building an online library of stories being read by people of all ages in our community.  We need volunteers like YOU to be a virtual reader and a virtual Book Buddy! 

Please sign up to volunteer to share your time and a much-loved children's story and your love of reading with early readers in our area.  We will send you the Book Buddies Toolkit to assist you and other interested volunteers in how to record yourself reading young children's books.  The online Guide can be accessed through this Form:  21VirtualBookBuddies. or by registering for this project.

Participating is easy!  The time needed is about an hour to 90 minutes to plan and record yourself reading one children's story, depending on how much you choose to rehearse the reading.  You will submit your recording via WeTransfer, which make it easy to upload your video and send to us.

Book Buddies is an ongoing project, so feel free to sign up and submit as many recordings of reading children's books as you wish.  We are also encouraging people to read stories in other languages, especially in Spanish (the books themselves do not need to be Spanish-language books).  Please contact us for more information about submitting a recording in a language other than English.

Buddies of NJ is an HIV/AIDS Resource Center for Bergen and Passaic County.

Needed:  Nurse Assistant who has basic knowledge with medical terminology and is comfortable with diverse cultures and the LGBTQ Community.

Looking for a professional person who can donate regular hours assisting in our accounting department.

Ideal candidate would be a retired professional looking to give back to the community.  Also a younger person with self initiative and good work skills.  This person should be able to just jump right in with a little bit of instruction.  

It is preferred person can file hard and computer files correctly; Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office; and General Knowledge of Quick Books.

Each event is unique in nature and needs volunteers in the following areas: planning (start to end), promoting under direction of event manager, donation and prized organization, ‘day of’ set-up and clean-up, ticket collectors, greeters, raffles sales, table organization, cooks, servers, performers and artists, security and other misc. These are pretty much staples at our events.

MEAL DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - WEEKDAYS

Meals on Wheels of Mercer County works to assist individuals to maintain independence, dignity, health and well-being by providing comprehensive nutrition services and helping ease social isolation.  Most of our participants are seniors and homebound.  Our service area is Ewing, Trenton, Lawrenceville, Hamilton, Princeton, East Windsor, West Windsor and Hightstown. 

Our volunteers deliver meals every day, Monday through Friday between 10am-12:00pm.  Volunteers pick up meals at Rider University in Lawrenceville and follow a route that takes about 1-1/2 hours to complete.  Volunteers enjoy getting to know the participants, and the participants appreciate the meal and the daily conversation. 

What kinds of tasks will I be doing? 
Garden Crew volunteers support Pony Power's half-acre Farm in the Forest food production garden. Tasks include weeding, mulching, watering and harvesting.

How long is a shift? 
Shifts are typically 1 hour, once a week (or more, if you'd like!)

Can my teenager volunteer? 
Yes! We welcome volunteers ages 14 years and up.

CASAs work one-on-one with the abused or neglected child, gathering information from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers in order to make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. No experience or formal education is needed!

Our Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers are crucial to the health of our animal ambassadors.

Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers are responsible for feeding, cleaning & changing water dishes, and cleaning & maintaining the aviary habitats for our non-releasable birds of prey (ex. owls, hawks). Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers must be comfortable around the animals they are caring for and with the diets they will be offering to the animals. Our birds of prey typically eat deceased rodents. It is a messy job and you must love birds! 

Training will be provided.

Accompany our staff or go it alone - outreach at health fairs and public events, share information about CONTACT's services, recruit client and volunteers. 

Work with us in our small office located in Northfield, a day (or part of a day) per week or as available to create new client welcome packets, update excel and other databases of client and volunteer information, update files with new address and other information, etc.

Children in foster care need compassionate, dedicated community members to look out for their best interests and speak up when needed.

CASA volunteers are partnered with a child or group of siblings who are involved in the child welfare system. Volunteers spend time with the child/children, gather information about his or her needs from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers, and make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. The role of a CASA volunteer is simple: to advocate for whatever is in the best interest of the child/children.

You don't need any educational background or special skills; we will provide all the training you need.

In just about 15 hours per month, you can make a difference in a child's life. The next volunteer training begins in October. We hope you join us!

Looking for a fun volunteer activity that you can do with your friends, co workers or family members?  Would you like to meet the families you are helping? If you answered yes then this is an opportunity perfect for you!

Each night a different volunteer group comes to the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey to prepare dinner for the families staying at our House. The process is very simple.

Once you volunteer to do this you will be ready to schedule another date.  The families truly appreciate having dinner ready for them after a long day at the hospital.

Passaic County 4-H is looking to start an art club for youth in Passaic County. We are in need of adult volunteers to help facilitate programming. Knowledge of and passion for art is appreciated. Required to be able to work with youth in grades 4 to 13. This club would meet at least once a month.

If you or someone you know is interested in working with youth, helping to teach a new skill (sewing, 3-D printing, photography, astronomy), lead a STEM program, coordinate a service project, or just help youth improve their public presentation skills then this is the place for you. Passaic County 4-H is seeking volunteers to work with youth in your community. You can lead an activity of interest, facilitate a long-term project, or become a leader of one of our clubs. Passaic County 4-H uses a learn-by-doing approach to teach important life skills. 

Stein Hospice patients are often bed or chair bound and in need of companionship.  If you have a big heart and want to bring joy into someone's life, volunteer to visit a patient on a weekly basis.  

CASA volunteers are paired with a foster child and get to know that child and his or her circumstances through monthly visits. Information is gathered from teachers, doctors, and social workers and volunteers make recommendations to a court judge based on the child’s needs. Volunteers influence a foster child’s life across many significant and far-reaching life concerns such as medical care, academics, and enrichment activities.  

We ask for a minimum one year commitment, and our volunteers typically spend about 10-15 hours a month on their case.

Looking for energetic individuals to volunteer in our Family Room Program.

In addition to the House programs, our mission has expanded into our neighboring communities with our 11 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.   Our Family Rooms, located in the 9 South Jersey hospitals below, are a comfortable place for parents, siblings, and extended family members to take a moment for themselves to rest and refresh while remaining steps away from their child’s bedside.  The rooms provide living room areas with comfortable seating,  refrigerators and microwaves, quick service meals, snacks, and beverages.  Rooms may also include access to TVs, and internet, sleep rooms and full bathrooms in some locations.
