Volunteer Opportunity – Food Rescue and Delivery

Share My Meals is seeking volunteers to help recover surplus meals and deliver them to those in need. Volunteers pick up meals from a professional kitchen in Camden and deliver them to a nearby nonprofit organization serving individuals in need. The drive between locations is ~20-minutes and includes a quick stop to collect empty containers from the nonprofit before pickup.

Please note: Volunteer opportunities occur on weekday mornings and afternoons. The schedule for this route is to be determined, but interested volunteers are encouraged to get started by completing our volunteer application.

Volunteers must be 18+, have a valid driver’s license, a personal vehicle with insurance, and a smartphone for the tracking app. Volunteers should be comfortable lifting 20-30lbs.

Training and insulated bags are provided.

Travelers Aid at Newark Liberty International Airport is seeking volunteers to welcome passengers and provide information regarding a variety of travel-related services. This is an excellent opportunity to be a welcoming ambassador for travelers from all over the world, improve your communication skills and gain experience assisting and working with people. Travelers Aid volunteers greet passengers with a smile and provide any tips needed to navigate the airport.

Volunteers are placed at key locations throughout the airport. We require a minimum of 5 month service (one 4 hour shift per week or at least 2 shifts per month). RISE (Reflections InterACTive Summer Experience)  is the spinoff of the Reflections school year program, which addresses a variety of issues through the use of improvisational theatre.

This is a FREE program, funded by the County of Bergen.

Teens can earn volunteer hours and acquire leadership skills and have fun, all at the same time.

This Summer,  RISE 2026 will be on Tuesday nights, starting  on July 7th and will run until August 25th.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Middlesex County Center for Empowerment! Join the anti-sexual violence movement and learn how to support survivors of sexual violence in Middlesex County by volunteering for our Confidential Sexual Violence Advocate (CSVA) Program.

CSVAs are trained to answer the 24-hour hotline and accompany survivors to forensic examinations, police stations, and court. CSVAs provide emotional support, information, and referrals to survivors and their loved ones to help them understand their rights and what options and resources are available to them.

The Center for Empowerment provides a free 40+ hour training for those age 18 and over who are interested in becoming an advocate. No experience is necessary, and bilingual individuals are encouraged to apply. Volunteers must live in or near Middlesex County, complete a background check, and have their own reliable transportation and cell phone. Discovering the wonder of how something works can be the spark that ignites a child’s enthusiasm for learning. The world of science provides unlimited potential.  In the time it takes to have lunch, employees can create a STEM kit and help light that spark in a child’s imagination!

A STEM kit is comprised of a book, supplemental materials and all of the items necessary to complete an age appropriate science experiment.  STEM kits give teachers, child care workers and parents ready-to-use tools to unlock the possibilities for a child’s future in science, math and related fields.

This is a fun and interesting team-building project and has a long-term positive impact for children in our community.

United Way of Northern New Jersey works to build a love of reading and early literacy among children from ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those struggling financially.  One way we do this is providing Reading Bags to children who do not have access to books and other learning materials in their homes. 

You can help by becoming a Book Buddy and providing one or more Reading Bags for a local child.  Simply sign up, then feel free to either run a drive to collect the items needed for the bags or build your own Reading Kit(s) to donate.

Reading Bags can include: 

The Basics:  1-3 new children's books (for ages 2 1/2 to 6 years), a pack of crayons, an activity or coloring book, a bookmark, and a small inspirational card or note (no last names)

Enhancements (one or more of the following):  a small new stuffed animal or pillow, a small snack pack, flash cards with letters, etc.

Items can be shared in reusable bags, decorated canvas bags or drawstring bags.  New books in multiple languages are also welcomed.

Every year in New Jersey, 341,000 tons of prepared food goes to waste, while 994,800 New Jersey residents don’t have enough food to eat. Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to local nonprofits that support individuals in need.

About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to pick up meal donations from a corporate kitchen in Roseland on Fridays starting at 1:15pm and deliver them to a nonprofit organization in Morristown (~20 minute drive).

We are looking to build a small group of volunteers who would be willing to support this route on a regular basis starting as soon as possible.

In order to adhere to food safety guidelines, Share My Meals provides all necessary equipment (i.e. insulated bags) to transport food donations safely and requires volunteers to track pick-up and delivery route start and end times using our smart phone app.

When you help an adult, you help her or his entire family. At Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, we have a long list of U.S. citizens and immigrants, among them refugees and asylum seekers, waiting for help in learning to speak, understand, read, and write in English. We need volunteers to teach them. Here's how you can help: Learn to teach ESOL and Basic Literacy with LVA. After training, you will be matched with a small group of students (three to five) and tutor them for at least two hours each week via distance learning.

Become a volunteer literacy tutor by registering for our 10-hour (five days of two hours each) virtual tutor training course. This opportunity is only for local residents of Essex and Passaic Counties or others than can meet in-person in these counties.

We seek people who are the fixer uppers types, handy men or women who like to keep busy physically in a positive, uplifting atmosphere. Individuals who would volunteer for this position would help keep the YMCA maintained and in good repair. Work can be repair projects, painting, decorating, and plumbing, gardening or simply taking out the trash and vacuuming. We are totally flexible and cater to your interests and time schedule. The Child Care Aide will assist in the planning and implementation of the appropriate program activities and events as assigned. Qualifications: The Child Care Aide must be 15 years of age or older, have the personal qualities needed to work with children and their parents and be sensitive to the needs of others. They should be energetic, creative and have a good knowledge of sports, games, and other age-appropriate activities.

Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) partners with students to ensure they are ready for, enroll in, and complete college.  We confront the challenges of low-income, urban school districts by providing families with equitable access to the critical tools and services necessary for college success. 

Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) was founded in 2007 to bring innovative solutions to the historically under-resourced Yonkers Public Schools.  Initially providing college support to 12th grade Yonkers students, YPIE expanded its model to include College Readiness, College Access, and College Persistence programming, serving 1,200 students each year from 9th grade through college.

In fall 2023, YPIE introduced YPIE Jersey City, replicating its college success model for public school students in Jersey City.

YPIE has put a college degree within reach for thousands of students. Our work with students and families is a partnership. We make a commitment to students to ensure we do everything we can to support them on a journey to college success.

Our YPIE students have tremendous stories to share!  YPIE Essay Coaches provide support to our high school juniors and seniors as they write their college essays, a critical part of the college application process.  Essay Coaches work closely with and under the guidance of the YPIE College Advisors assigned to Dickinson, Ferris, and Lincoln High Schools in Jersey City.  Training and support is provided to Essay Coaches throughout the essay writing process, with regular benchmark checkpoints to ensure that the process is staying on track.  


Essay Coaches can choose to volunteer for one or more of these 10-week sessions:

Summer Season - July to August

Fall Season - September to November

Essay Coaches can choose to meet with their students virtually (video/phone calls) or in person at the YPIE College Zone (campus of St. Peter's University).

Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to local nonprofits that support individuals in need.

About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to pick up prepared meal donations from a corporate campus cafeteria on Thursdays at 2pm and deliver them to a shelter in Camden (~5 minute drive).

The Closter Nature Center is seeking a skilled and passionate volunteer to lead the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for our 136-acre preserve. This is a high-impact role that will create a foundational resource for our conservation efforts, ecological data collection, and property management.

The selected volunteer will guide the organization in transitioning from initial concepts to a fully functional mapping system that tracks woodland health, identifies notable features, and protects our vital water resources.  Much of this work can be conducted remotely, but on-site visits for data collection and in-person meetings must be possible for the successful volunteer.

System Design & Setup: Lead the setup of a GIS platform and procedures for system maintenance (The Center currently holds an ArcGIS license but is open to alternative software recommendations).

Ecological Mapping: Develop layers to map forest species, identify invasive growth patterns, and track the progress of ongoing conservation initiatives.

Asset & Resource Management: Denote property boundaries, notable physical features, and critical water resources within the preserve.

Program Oversight: Manage the initial startup phase of the program and establish protocols for long-term data collection.

Training: Provide basic guidance and training to Nature Center volunteers and staff on how to utilize the mapping tools for field data entry and viewing.

Proven experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar mapping systems).

Understanding of data management and spatial analysis.

Interest in ecology, forestry, or environmental conservation.

Ability to work independently and lead a project from the implementation phase.

Strong communication skills to explain technical tools to non-technical volunteers.

Professional and amateur photographers are needed to photograph TNC's events, grounds, flora, and fauna. Maintain the nature center photo collections and files so that we can highlight all that we do.

Program photographer volunteers are responsible for attending TNC programs and events and taking digital pictures of the staff, volunteers, and animal ambassadors providing programs and assisting customers. These images are needed so that TNC may highlight all we do to accomplish our mission. The images provided may be utilized by TNC soley in either digital and or print. Individuals are needed who can provide their own digital camera, have a cheerful, friendly attitude, professional and efficient, and great communication skills.

Description:  Volunteers that work on our loading dock help unload donations and load purchased items into customer vehicles.  In between assisting customers and donors, Volunteers will clean and stock merchandise on the sales floor. Comfort Zone is a lot like regular camp! It’s fun. It has all the traditional parts of camp-archery, arts & crafts, canoeing, bonfires, s’mores and more! A unique part of Comfort Zone is that we also work to help kids with their grief. You don’t need to have experienced a loss or have any clinical background.

During this four-hour volunteer training session, you will meet Comfort Zone staff, campers, and volunteers who will explain what to expect at camp and how our program impacts grieving children and teens. LUCY is thrilled to partner with the Food Bank of South Jersey in implementing our on- site food pantry. We consistently provide canned goods, fresh produce & vegetables, protein, dairy and eggs for youth, parent/guardians and the Camden community

Volunteers assist members with aphasia in our member-run gift shop making jewelry. Accent is on providing friendly conversation and assistance to those with limited hand mobility.

Times -
Monday & Tuesday 1 hour shifts between 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

We ask all volunteers to commit to at least one hour a week for our 15 week semester.

Volunteers are needed to help at the food pantry every third Tuesday at 12:00pm - 2:00pm. Volunteers will help unload food delivery truck, put donated food out on pantry shelves and help hand out food.

Even before any disaster or crisis hits, food security can be a significant issue for ALICE®  (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those in poverty. ALICE was already navigating life without a safety net and was one crisis away from financial despair. The government shutdown and suspension of SNAP (food assistance) benefits is that crisis, creating a significant increase in food insecurity while pantries are already at capacity and experiencing shortages.

In response to this impact of the SNAP emergency, United Way is taking action and encouraging people and groups to collect needed items for local food banks/pantries. While Foodstock is a year-round project, we are strongly promoting its expansion during this critical timeframe, given the critical need right now.  This will help ensure ALICE and poverty-level households have enough food while the SNAP program is on hold.

Bergen Volunteers’ Mentoring program provides individuals with one-on-one support. Our staff and volunteers help mentees learn about the resources available within the community while tapping into their strengths to identify and strive towards specific personal improvement goals.

Our long-term mentoring program runs for 18 months and matches volunteers with:

Volunteers enrolled in our long-term program must be at least 21 years old, complete an interview and criminal background check ($17), as well as attend our training session. Ideal candidates are great listeners, non-judgmental, resourceful, and have a generous heart. During the 18 month commitment period, volunteers are expected to meet with their mentees twice per month for 2 hours each get-together.

Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to individuals in need.

About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to help with our donation receiving operations in Princeton on Fridays from 2:00 to 4:30pm.This is a hands-on way to help make sure donated meals are received, sorted, and ready to be shared with our community.

What you’ll do:

Organize and sort incoming meal donations

Assist with keeping our Hub tidy and efficient

Be available for occasional local meal donation pick-ups (car required)

Volunteers should expect to lift and carry full bags and trays of food. Fridays are our busiest donation day, so volunteers should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to take initiative with minimal direction.

For the mechanically inclined and handy person, volunteers work as part of a team to restore and maintain aircrafts, displays, and general maintenance work on the museum property and facility itself.

Currently, in need of help fixing the interior roof and ceiling tiles. 

Women's Rights is looking for a few volunteers to work Monday – Friday from 9-1 and 1- 5. The same volunteer will not work all week. Tasks would include answering phones, routing calls, and greeting folks who come to the door. Volunteers must speak both English and Spanish.

The gardens at Flat Rock Brook were created by our volunteer gardeners. It is an ongoing project and everyone is welcome to join this group regardless of experience. Volunteer gardeners work on plantings, upkeep, maintenance and care of our gardens with a special emphasis on our Native Habitat and Butterfly Gardens. We use integrated pest management gardening techniques and plant natives to attract beneficial insects and other wildlife.

These Rangers will help the education staff facilitate public and private programming including field trips, weekend public programs, and birthday parties. Please note that most of our public programming occurs on Sunday afternoons. Experienced Jr. Rangers will also be permitted to conduct storytimes and small craft projects if they feel comfortable doing so.

Jr. Rangers will be required to attend an Educational Training Day in April. Staff will always be present and available while these young volunteers are present and they are not to leave the Nature Center alone without permission from a staff member first.

Flat Rock Brook hosts several annual events. Our annual Recognition Dinner honors outstanding individuals and companies. The Great Fall Festival brings hundreds of families to the Nature Center for outdoor fun. We seek individuals to assist with a variety of efforts to help ensure our success at these events.

There are no specific requirements for becoming a special event volunteer; however, as events come closer, there will be specific jobs that need to be filled.

We are seeking Russian-speaking telephone callers to help with socializing Russian-speaking clients. Volunteers will enjoy a one-on-one relationship with one of our homebound and lonely senior clients, helping to alleviate loneliness and isolation with important human contact and encouraging them to socialize. Volunteers provide companionship once or twice a week for approximately 15-20 minutes per call, helping to improve the quality of life of the individual.

Screening interview, application, and background check required.

Many area youths do not have access to books when they can’t go to school or the library. Help bring literature to them by reading a book and submitting a virtual storytime to us! 

We will be posting the videos on YouTube and area youth will have access to those recordings. To complete this project, you only need an age-appropriate book from Kindergarten-5th Grade and a way to record video (phone, computer, or another recording device).

Use your life experience!  Social workers make in home assessments of families requesting these services, and volunteers are matched based on their time needs and requirements geographically; and the nature of the goals the family wants to work on.
