Needs From: Volunteer NJ!

Every year in New Jersey, 341,000 tons of prepared food goes to waste, while 994,800 New Jersey residents don’t have enough food to eat. Share My Meals is closing the gap between food waste and hunger by mobilizing volunteers to recover nutritious surplus meals from commercial kitchens and deliver them to local nonprofits that support individuals in need.

About the opportunity: Share My Meals is looking for dedicated volunteers to pick up meal donations from Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2pm and deliver them to a soup kitchen in Asbury Park (~15 minute drive).

We are looking to build a community of volunteers who would be willing to support this route on a regular basis starting as soon as possible.  

In order to adhere to food safety guidelines, Share My Meals provides all necessary equipment (i.e. insulated bags) to transport food donations safely and requires volunteers to track pick-up and delivery route start and end times using our smart phone app.

Please note: food pickup and delivery requires heavy lifting.

United Way of Northern New Jersey is building an online library of stories being read by people of all ages in our community.  We need volunteers like YOU to be a virtual reader and a virtual Book Buddy! 

Please sign up to volunteer to share your time and a much-loved children's story and your love of reading with early readers in our area.  We will send you the Book Buddies Toolkit to assist you and other interested volunteers in how to record yourself reading young children's books.  The online Guide can be accessed through this Form:  21VirtualBookBuddies. or by registering for this project.

Participating is easy!  The time needed is about an hour to 90 minutes to plan and record yourself reading one children's story, depending on how much you choose to rehearse the reading.  You will submit your recording via WeTransfer, which make it easy to upload your video and send to us.

Book Buddies is an ongoing project, so feel free to sign up and submit as many recordings of reading children's books as you wish.  We are also encouraging people to read stories in other languages, especially in Spanish (the books themselves do not need to be Spanish-language books).  Please contact us for more information about submitting a recording in a language other than English.

Discovering the wonder of how something works can be the spark that ignites a child’s enthusiasm for learning. The world of science provides unlimited potential.  In the time it takes to have lunch, employees can create a STEM kit and help light that spark in a child’s imagination!

A STEM kit is comprised of a book, supplemental materials and all of the items necessary to complete an age appropriate science experiment.  STEM kits give teachers, child care workers and parents ready-to-use tools to unlock the possibilities for a child’s future in science, math and related fields.

This is a fun and interesting team-building project and has a long-term positive impact for children in our community.

We are seeking a volunteer that knows sign language to assist at our Haworth Group Home. 

Spectrum for Living is flexible with a volunteers schedule.  

We constantly have needs to network with businesses and community organizations that have similar goals.  We need highly motivated individuals who can help identify: contact information, parameter of engagement, and available resources to share and to compile data of such.

Joe had a wish that he could find a few people in the area who would be willing to help and the garden's vitality once he moved on.  There is a lot of flexibility in the schedule.  This is an outdoor activity and offers a safe and healthy opportunity.

Ideally it should be someone who loves gardening and/or helping things grow and stay healthy.  Perhaps someone who is retired and/or has off in the early parts of the morning.

Buddies of NJ is an HIV/AIDS Resource Center for Bergen and Passaic County.

Needed:  Nurse Assistant who has basic knowledge with medical terminology and is comfortable with diverse cultures and the LGBTQ Community.

Looking for a professional person who can donate regular hours assisting in our accounting department.

Ideal candidate would be a retired professional looking to give back to the community.  Also a younger person with self initiative and good work skills.  This person should be able to just jump right in with a little bit of instruction.  

It is preferred person can file hard and computer files correctly; Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office; and General Knowledge of Quick Books.

We need volunteers to help create informational packets and condom packets to distribute to the community. This person could ideally work in an assembly line to create several packets.

We need volunteers to come on Fridays (weather permitting) from 10am to 2pm each week to care for the garden.   Cleaning, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, planting... will be done as needed so be prepared for a little bit of dirt. MEAL DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - WEEKDAYS

Meals on Wheels of Mercer County works to assist individuals to maintain independence, dignity, health and well-being by providing comprehensive nutrition services and helping ease social isolation.  Most of our participants are seniors and homebound.  Our service area is Ewing, Trenton, Lawrenceville, Hamilton, Princeton, East Windsor, West Windsor and Hightstown. 

Our volunteers deliver meals every day, Monday through Friday between 10am-12:00pm.  Volunteers pick up meals at Rider University in Lawrenceville and follow a route that takes about 1-1/2 hours to complete.  Volunteers enjoy getting to know the participants, and the participants appreciate the meal and the daily conversation. 

What kinds of tasks will I be doing? 
Garden Crew volunteers support Pony Power's half-acre Farm in the Forest food production garden. Tasks include weeding, mulching, watering and harvesting.

How long is a shift? 
Shifts are typically 1 hour, once a week (or more, if you'd like!)

Can my teenager volunteer? 
Yes! We welcome volunteers ages 14 years and up.

Volunteers will receive special training to serve as Patient Companions. A Patient Companion’s duties depend on the patient’s unique needs and interests.

Our Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers are crucial to the health of our animal ambassadors.

Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers are responsible for feeding, cleaning & changing water dishes, and cleaning & maintaining the aviary habitats for our non-releasable birds of prey (ex. owls, hawks). Birds of Prey Assistant Caretakers must be comfortable around the animals they are caring for and with the diets they will be offering to the animals. Our birds of prey typically eat deceased rodents. It is a messy job and you must love birds!

Accompany our staff or go it alone - outreach at health fairs and public events, share information about CONTACT's services, recruit client and volunteers.

Looking for a fun volunteer activity that you can do with your friends, co workers or family members?  Would you like to meet the families you are helping? If you answered yes then this is an opportunity perfect for you!

Each night a different volunteer group comes to the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey to prepare dinner for the families staying at our House. The process is very simple.

Once you volunteer to do this you will be ready to schedule another date.  The families truly appreciate having dinner ready for them after a long day at the hospital.

Passaic County 4-H is looking to start an art club for youth in Passaic County. We are in need of adult volunteers to help facilitate programming. Knowledge of and passion for art is appreciated. Required to be able to work with youth in grades 4 to 13. This club would meet at least once a month.

If you or someone you know is interested in working with youth, helping to teach a new skill (sewing, 3-D printing, photography, astronomy), lead a STEM program, coordinate a service project, or just help youth improve their public presentation skills then this is the place for you. Passaic County 4-H is seeking volunteers to work with youth in your community. You can lead an activity of interest, facilitate a long-term project, or become a leader of one of our clubs. Passaic County 4-H uses a learn-by-doing approach to teach important life skills. 

Stein Hospice patients are often bed or chair bound and in need of companionship.  If you have a big heart and want to bring joy into someone's life, volunteer to visit a patient on a weekly basis.  

CASA volunteers are paired with a foster child and get to know that child and his or her circumstances through monthly visits. Information is gathered from teachers, doctors, and social workers and volunteers make recommendations to a court judge based on the child’s needs. Volunteers influence a foster child’s life across many significant and far-reaching life concerns such as medical care, academics, and enrichment activities.  

We ask for a minimum one year commitment, and our volunteers typically spend about 10-15 hours a month on their case.

In addition to the House programs, our mission has expanded into our neighboring communities with our 11 Ronald McDonald Family Rooms.   Our Family Rooms, located in the 9 South Jersey hospitals below, are a comfortable place for parents, siblings, and extended family members to take a moment for themselves to rest and refresh while remaining steps away from their child’s bedside.  The rooms provide living room areas with comfortable seating,  refrigerators and microwaves, quick service meals, snacks, and beverages.  Rooms may also include access to TVs, and internet, sleep rooms and full bathrooms in some locations.

Home Friends is a visitor program for older adults or people with limiting health conditions. This program was created in 1987 in response to a growing need for companionship and support for home-based older adults in Princeton and nearby communities.

Volunteers can do a variety of things during weekly home visits such as: walk together, read and sort mail, exchange stories about life experiences, or pursue mutually shared interests. Some volunteers bring library books, share a movie, help with technology, or work in the garden together.

Home Friends was designed to complement and support, rather than replace, the role of family and paid caregivers.

Once matched with an older adult, we ask that you meet at least one hour a week to build a good relationship that the person can rely on. 

Those who are bilingual or multilingual are greatly encouraged to apply. This opportunity is best suited for individuals over 40 years old and those with flexibility during the work week.

Project Appreciation offers a meaningful way for community members to express their gratitude to local first responders by assembling thoughtful treat bags.

You can support Project Appreciation by organizing a collection drive and helping to pack these thank-you bags, which will be distributed to first responders throughout South Jersey. We invite schools, faith-based organizations, corporate groups, and community teams to join this effort in honor and remember September 11, 2001.

Our ambitious goal is to gather enough donations to fill a "thank you" bag for every first responder across all seven counties in South Jersey. It's a significant challenge, but with your support, we’re confident we can achieve it.

United Way of Greater Mercer County is seeking volunteers to join the tax prep team. The program provides families and individuals making less than $65,000/year with FREE tax return preparation.

Benefits to the Community
Last year's volunteers prepared over 1,000 free tax returns and provided total refunds of $1.3 million including Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC) to working individuals and families as well as those who are 60 years of age and older in our community.

The average adjusted gross income of working individuals and families we serve is $26,000/year. Rising costs of food, housing, and essentials leave families struggling to make ends meet. The savings from tax preparation fees and refunds received are used for basic needs like:

- healthcare
- childcare
- transportation to their place of employment
- and much more!

To qualify for Federal resources like food assistance (including school lunch and breakfast), health insurance (including Medicaid), college financial aid, and other programs proof of income is required. Our Assistant Land Steward are important volunteers who help us maintain our preserve.

Assistant Land Stewards are responsible for helping our Land & Facilities Manager maintain a healthy and accessible preserve. They help keep our trails wood chipped, remove invasive plant species, assist with seasonal trail clearance (ex. removing leaves from paths), and other habitat restoration and trail improvement needs. Volunteers may also assist  staff with various routine day-to-day maintenance projects and special one-time projects.

HomeWorks is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers who are passionate about educational equity, tutoring, mentoring, and building relationships with HomeWorks scholars. HomeWorks Trenton is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a community-based after-school boarding program that includes academic and identity-driven leadership enrichment activities to supplement public schools, equip young women, and build community leaders. HomeWorks fosters a community of young women from Trenton who strive to achieve their full potential and positively impact the world around them.

As a tutor, you will volunteer from 7pm to 8:30pm on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Priority is given to tutors who are available at least two days per week. You must be able to commit to your days throughout the duration of the school year. You must be strong in either math, science, history, or humanities. Our greatest need at the moment is for math tutors; however, tutors in any subject are welcome. 

Tutors should have an interest in and comfort working with 9-12th grade female students. They must be culturally competent and able to honor and respect the beliefs, language, interpersonal styles and behaviors of the individual scholars in our program.

Project Sunshine is an international volunteer-led nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring joy and play to pediatric patients. Our volunteers get firsthand experience of aiding the healing journey of children facing medical challenges through play, which allows for creative expression, creates an outlet for emotion, and minimizes the anxiety or stress the children experience. Project Sunshine volunteers do this through in-hospital visits, packing activity kits, and leading virtual play (TelePlay). We lead programming for medical facilities or disease specific nonprofits.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Assistant Site Coordinators/Interns need to be reasonably computer literate to prepare taxes. All interns must attend a short orientation course and software training. VITA interns and tax preparers become certified with the IRS through the Link and Learn program. All materials needed for the certification process are available online. The certification exams are open book and do not have time limits.

Provide free income tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. To establish the greatest degree of public trust, Interns have a responsibility to provide high quality service and uphold the highest of ethical standards. Provide on-site review of all tax returns completed by other VITA preparers at UWPC VITA site. Looking for a person to conduct a weekly sing-a-long/ chorus, with the ultimate goal to put on converts for holidays.

Kindergarten is the start of a formal school environment for many children.  United Way, as part of our United In Care program, encourages school-readiness and early literacy.  Through this effort, we would like each child at one of our many partner preschools to get a card or letter of encouragement that creates excitement about entering kindergarten.

Volunteering for this project is easy and can be done by ANYONE!  Simply make a card or write a short note of support and encouragement for a new kindergartener.  You can include a favorite memory about your own kindergarten experience or perhaps the titles of your favorite children's books.  Please send your card/letter to United Way of Northern New Jersey at P.O. As part of Women United's focus on supporting ALICE families in our community, Women United volunteers are encouraged to take part in the Book Buddies project, sharing your love of reading with young children from ALICE families.

United Way of Northern New Jersey is building an online library of stories being read by people of all ages and backgrounds in our community.  We need volunteers like YOU to be a virtual reader and a virtual Book Buddy! 

When you register to share your time, a much-loved children's story and your love of reading with early readers in our area, you will use the Book Buddies Toolkit to assist you in recording yourself reading young children's books.  

Participating is easy!  The time needed is about an hour to 90 minutes to plan and record yourself reading one children's story, depending on how much you choose to rehearse the reading.  You will submit your recording via WeTransfer, which make it easy to upload your video and send to us.  

Book Buddies is an ongoing project, so feel free to sign up and submit as many recordings of reading children's books as you wish. 

We are also encouraging people to read stories in other languages, especially in Spanish (the books themselves do not need to be Spanish-language books).  Please contact us for more information about submitting a recording in a language other than English.

We are currently seeking a seasoned business professional to assist in the development and facilitation of a career readiness workshop in support of the Jersey Cares Youth Workforce Development Program. As part of this program, participating interns are required to dedicate 120 hours to a nonprofit organization and engage in a minimum of two career readiness workshops.

Recognizing the diverse schedules and geographical locations of our interns across the state, we have identified the need for an innovative approach to workshop delivery. In lieu of traditional in-person sessions, we aim to leverage technology to provide accessible learning opportunities. Specifically, we are requesting workshop developers and facilitators to create slideshows on a topic listed below and record their presentations for our archives. This format enables interns to access and engage with the workshop content at their convenience, aligning with their individual schedules.

This initiative presents a great opportunity for volunteers to contribute their expertise towards preparing our youth for successful entry into the workforce.

This spring is the perfect time to take action to assist ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families who work hard in our community, but who struggle financially and are one crisis or emergency away from falling into poverty.

As part of this year's National Volunteer Month (April) and to promote volunteerism that has a direct impact in our community, United Way of Northern New Jersey is offering a volunteer project to assist families with critical essential items for their well-being.

Volunteers are asked to create Care Kits that include any (or all) of the following essential needs for families:

Items can be full-size or travel-size (which works better in shelter or transitional housing situations) and can be packed in Ziplock types of bags or in any type of reusable bags.

Another option for volunteers is to create a Baby Care Kit - which would include any type of baby care items such as:  diapers, wipes, baby shampoo and baby wash, towels, bottles, clothes, powder formula, toys and anything else that would be helpful for new parents in need.

We are aiming to have the Care Kits ready for distribution to our ALICE clients and those of our partner nonprofit organizations by Friday, April 28, 2023, but we can accept the Care Kits any time this spring.

We are looking for dedicated volunteers to help us unload our inventory to restock our pantries. These deliveries happen 1-2 times a month. Volunteers should expect to lift approximately 50lbs, move the load from the truck to the pantry, and to travel to both pantries to unload the truck. The locations of our pantries are listed below:

Volunteer Guardianship One on One, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains and monitors volunteer guardians to provide guardianship services. 

We are looking for a volunteer guardian for "Ana". She is 36 years old and currently residing in a care facility near Wayne due to mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. Ana is originally from the Dominican Republic and, although she speaks and understands English, a bilingual volunteer would be ideal. She has some family in PA that visit when they can, but they are unable to serve as guardians and she is frequently alone and unengaged. However, when someone shows interest, she can describe what she likes and wants, which includes reading books in Spanish, cleaning the common area, and browsing her phone. Ana urgently needs someone to visit her consistently and to be a responsible point person for her medical and psychological care in order to maximize her opportunities for independence and increased quality of life.

Volunteer musicians are needed to play any time during the day especially during meals on Christian Health's Wyckoff campus. Hours are typically between 10:00am to noon, 1:30 to 3:30pm and 5:00pm to 7:00pm. 

Requirements: All Christian Health volunteers must complete an application, annual training, background screening. If volunteering in resident/patient areas, Christian Health requires at least a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service throughout the calendar year and to be fully vaccinated (boosted) against COVID-19 and influenza for the current flu season (November - April).

Friendly Visitor – Come as an individual or visit with your family to socialize with our residents. Bring a favorite game to play, small craft activity, or entertain with your musical talent. Feel free to use your skills to create a meaningful visit.

**We ask that Friendly Visitors please commit at least 25 hours per year. Your visits & friendship mean a lot to our consumers and we want them and you to get the most out of this program.

Adopt a Garden – Help plant and maintain flower and vegetable gardens located at all Spectrum residential and training facilities.

Recreation – Assist with planned Recreation Program activities including canteens, bowling, arts and crafts, cooking, woodworking, talent shows, and more.

Therapy Dog Program – Bring your certified therapy dog to visit our residential and training facilities.

Skill Based Volunteering – Provide instruction in music, art, computers, cooking and woodworking to our residents and/or assist with carpentry or painting services as needed.

Clerical volunteering is usually available at the River Vale Corporate Office.

Submit Volunteer Application

Work as part of a staff/volunteer team to lead a chess program for 8 to 18 year olds at the Boys & Girls Club.  Volunteers are asked to commit to 2-4 times per month, per session.  Chess Club meets once per week for 2 hours, for a 10 week program session in the Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter.

The opportunity for hands on learning about growing produce indoors hydroponically - such as, sanitary principals, relocation and transplanting and harvesting of produce, and interaction with tours.
