Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social MobilityOnly 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that. Here's how: 1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores. 2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.) 3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support. 4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people. 5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. Volunteer: Youth Volunteering Project: Spring into Action for ALICE Families - Create Care KitsThis spring is the perfect time to take action to assist ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families who work hard in our community, but who struggle financially and are one crisis or emergency away from falling into poverty. As part of this year's National Volunteer Month (April) and to promote volunteerism that has a direct impact in our community, United Way of Northern New Jersey is offering a volunteer project to assist families with critical essential items for their well-being. Volunteers are asked to create Care Kits that include any (or all) of the following essential needs for families: * Shampoo/Conditioner * Soap * Deodorant * Toothpaste/Toothbrushes * Feminine Hygiene products * Home cleaning products (paper towels, dish soap, household cleaner, toilet paper, laundry detergent, etc.) Items can be full-size or travel-size (which works better in shelter or transitional housing situations) and can be packed in Ziplock types of bags or in any type of reusable bags. Another option for volunteers is to create a Baby Care Kit - which would include any type of baby care items such as: diapers, wipes, baby shampoo and baby wash, towels, bottles, clothes, powder formula, toys and anything else that would be helpful for new parents in need. We are aiming to have the Care Kits ready for distribution to our ALICE clients and those of our partner nonprofit organizations by Friday, April 28, 2023, but we can accept the Care Kits any time this spring. United Way would like to recognize and thank all volunteers participating in this project, so if you register to participate, please take photos of your work and the kits, so that we can share your efforts on social media and thank you publicly for Taking Action for ALICE Families this spring! Volunteer: Volunteer Guardianship near Lincoln Park, Spanish speaking preferredVolunteer Guardianship One on One, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains and monitors volunteer guardians to provide guardianship services. We are looking for a volunteer guardian for "Ana". She is 36 years old and currently residing in a care facility near Wayne due to mental, physical, and developmental disabilities. Ana is originally from the Dominican Republic and, although she speaks and understands English, a bilingual volunteer would be ideal. She has some family in PA that visit when they can, but they are unable to serve as guardians and she is frequently alone and unengaged. However, when someone shows interest, she can describe what she likes and wants, which includes reading books in Spanish, cleaning the common area, and browsing her phone. Ana urgently needs someone to visit her consistently and to be a responsible point person for her medical and psychological care in order to maximize her opportunities for independence and increased quality of life. Volunteer: Foodstock Program - Powered by Women UnitedFoodstock with Women United Even before the pandemic hit, food security was a significant issue for ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those in poverty. ALICE was already navigating life without a safety net and was one crisis away from financial despair. That crisis is here, bringing a continued increase in food insecurity while pantries experience shortages. Year-round, Women United is taking action, collecting needed items for local food pantries. Due to the success of this summer initiative and the ongoing need, Women United has adopted food insecurity as its year-long mission. Foodstock with Women United will help ensure ALICE and poverty-level households have enough food to get through the day. How to Help Join in helping our neighbors in need in the northern New Jersey region by registering for Foodstock - Powered by Women United. To sign up, respond as an individual or as a team using the buttons to your right. Submit your name and email address—all other requested information is optional—and that’s it! Once you’ve registered, Women United will send you a Foodstock toolkit, which contains all you need to get started such as a list of participating pantries in our five-county region, needed pantry items, and ideas for getting others involved in this effort. As some pantries welcome homemade masks and food-collection bags, our toolkit also includes instructions on how to make these items. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of struggling northern New Jersey residents! Volunteer: Court Appointed Child Advocate VolunteerWho can become a CASA Volunteer?
CASA Volunteers are appointed by family court judges to advocate for the best interest of an abused or neglected child during their time in the child welfare system. They are in essence, the voice of the child, in court. CASA Volunteers interview parents, doctors, educators, foster parents, therapists, and anyone else involved in the life of the child they are assigned. Their goal is to provide child-focused reports to the court, which will lead to a speedy, safe, and permanent placement for the child. This is why it is imperative for these volunteers to go through extensive training. All Volunteers are screened closely for objectivity, competence, and commitment. You can become a CASA volunteer if: You have never been convicted of a crime and can pass a criminal background check. You are not personally involved with DCP&P (the state child welfare agency). Your job (and your life) is flexible. You are at least 21 years old. You are willing to make a one-year commitment. You pass CASA’s screening process.
Commitment Typically, a CASA volunteer will spend an average 10-20 hours per month working with their assigned case. Each case is different, so the amount of time required to get the job done varies significantly. We do require the volunteer to visit the child once every two weeks and be in court once every three months. CASA for Children of Bergen County asks that you make a one-year commitment. We prefer that a volunteer continues with their assigned case until it is permanently resolved which typically involves 18 months - two-year commitment. One of the primary benefits of the CASA program is that, unlike many caseworkers, most CASA volunteers remain a consistent figure during the course of case proceedings. This provides important continuity for children. If you are interested, CASA is holding its next Virtual Information Session on Wednesday, June 16th at 11 am and 3pm. Volunteer: Duffle Bag ProjectYour help is needed. With your donation of new duffle bags, you can help ease a child's transition from emergency housing to a long-term home. A new duffle bag provides a sensible means for a child to transport their belongings. You can help by making a donation or by leading a collection of brand-new overnight duffle bags. Expandable, collapsable duffle bags work best, because they are stackable and can be easily stored until needed. Your support will make it possible for a child to easily transport their personal belongings as they transition back to their families or to another caring home. With your help, you can be the one to make sure a child does not have to transport their personal items in a plastic bag. Each year more than 800 children and teens find temporary safe housing at Center For Family Services. During their stay at one of our safe homes, children are provided with a stable foundation that allows them to heal, grow, and experience joy. Services help to instill confidence and self-worth in our youth, empowering them to pave their path to a better life and brighter future. Family reunification is always our primary goal and whenever possible we support youth in transitioning back home. When this is not possible, we support youth in transitioning to another caring home.
