Volunteer: Foodstock Program - Powered by Women UnitedFoodstock with Women United Even before the pandemic hit, food security was a significant issue for ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those in poverty. ALICE was already navigating life without a safety net and was one crisis away from financial despair. That crisis is here, bringing a continued increase in food insecurity while pantries experience shortages. Year-round, Women United is taking action, collecting needed items for local food pantries. Due to the success of this summer initiative and the ongoing need, Women United has adopted food insecurity as its year-long mission. Foodstock with Women United will help ensure ALICE and poverty-level households have enough food to get through the day. How to Help Join in helping our neighbors in need in the northern New Jersey region by registering for Foodstock - Powered by Women United. To sign up, respond as an individual or as a team using the buttons to your right. Submit your name and email address—all other requested information is optional—and that’s it! Once you’ve registered, Women United will send you a Foodstock toolkit, which contains all you need to get started such as a list of participating pantries in our five-county region, needed pantry items, and ideas for getting others involved in this effort. As some pantries welcome homemade masks and food-collection bags, our toolkit also includes instructions on how to make these items. Agency: Transformations By New Jersey Angels New Jersey Angels believes that not everyone is called to foster or adopt, but everyone can make a difference in a child's life, and one of the ways we hope to do that is through our Love Box program. The Love Box program provides fostering families (caregivers, children in foster care, and biological/adopted children) with community and holistic support. As a Love Box group, you will be matched with a local foster family based on location, compatibility, and scope of needs. When our families are matched with committed volunteers who show up monthly, parents feel supported and children gain a greater sense of normalcy, relational permanency, and self confidence. Volunteer: Court Appointed Child Advocate VolunteerWho can become a CASA Volunteer?
CASA Volunteers are appointed by family court judges to advocate for the best interest of an abused or neglected child during their time in the child welfare system. They are in essence, the voice of the child, in court. CASA Volunteers interview parents, doctors, educators, foster parents, therapists, and anyone else involved in the life of the child they are assigned. Their goal is to provide child-focused reports to the court, which will lead to a speedy, safe, and permanent placement for the child. This is why it is imperative for these volunteers to go through extensive training. All Volunteers are screened closely for objectivity, competence, and commitment. You can become a CASA volunteer if: You have never been convicted of a crime and can pass a criminal background check. You are not personally involved with DCP&P (the state child welfare agency). Your job (and your life) is flexible. You are at least 21 years old. You are willing to make a one-year commitment. You pass CASA’s screening process.
Commitment Typically, a CASA volunteer will spend an average 10-20 hours per month working with their assigned case. Each case is different, so the amount of time required to get the job done varies significantly. We do require the volunteer to visit the child once every two weeks and be in court once every three months. CASA for Children of Bergen County asks that you make a one-year commitment. We prefer that a volunteer continues with their assigned case until it is permanently resolved which typically involves 18 months - two-year commitment. One of the primary benefits of the CASA program is that, unlike many caseworkers, most CASA volunteers remain a consistent figure during the course of case proceedings. This provides important continuity for children. If you are interested, CASA is holding its next Virtual Information Session on Wednesday, June 16th at 11 am and 3pm. Volunteer: Duffle Bag ProjectYour help is needed. With your donation of new duffle bags, you can help ease a child's transition from emergency housing to a long-term home. A new duffle bag provides a sensible means for a child to transport their belongings. You can help by making a donation or by leading a collection of brand-new overnight duffle bags. Expandable, collapsable duffle bags work best, because they are stackable and can be easily stored until needed. Your support will make it possible for a child to easily transport their personal belongings as they transition back to their families or to another caring home. With your help, you can be the one to make sure a child does not have to transport their personal items in a plastic bag. Each year more than 800 children and teens find temporary safe housing at Center For Family Services. During their stay at one of our safe homes, children are provided with a stable foundation that allows them to heal, grow, and experience joy. Services help to instill confidence and self-worth in our youth, empowering them to pave their path to a better life and brighter future. Family reunification is always our primary goal and whenever possible we support youth in transitioning back home. When this is not possible, we support youth in transitioning to another caring home. We encourage all eligible donors to do so because a shortage will affect millions, including anemic, transplant, cancer, surgery, sickle cell, trauma, and pregnant patients. There is no alternative for blood. In response, we have launched our COVID Code Red campaign to support blood centers and the healthcare system. The goal of this campaign is to start a social movement to bring greater awareness and rally young people nationwide to advocate for their local centers. UBI leadership would provide support to those volunteers or Code Red Responders. Responders have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the health of their community and give back during this hard time.
