Volunteer: Assistant Instructor

Dear Volunteer/ Intern

Platinum Minds is a non-profit organization that provides educational assistance, leadership training, mentoring and summer camp opportunities to high-achieving boys from urban communities, ages 11-17.  We are seeking volunteers and interns.  Platinum Minds is currently looking for male interns to serve as assistant instructors to the current director of instruction at our bi-monthly workshops.

Volunteer opportunity

The position will entail assisting the current director in teaching and instruction in a classroom type setting on Saturday mornings for 4 hours.  Interns will be responsible for helping to develop and implement team leadership projects.  The organization has three locations, thus the volunteer/intern can select the location that is most convenient, either Newark, Morristown or Asbury Park.  We are seeking two interns per location. The internship position is for one year, but can be renewed after the first year, if there is interest in continuing for a second year.   Each intern starts out as a junior instructor and after the second year becomes a lead instructor.  The program meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at the times mentioned below, from September to June.

Hours: Saturdays

Newark: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Morristown - 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Asbury Park - 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM

 

 Requirements:

Have an interested in working with the youth.

Have an understanding of the importance of being a positive role model to younger boys.

Have an interest in helping others achieve to their highest potential and in assisting them with this achievement. 

Understand and emulate the importance of living a healthy lifestyle

At least one year of college experience required.

Assess clinical needs of residents individually referred for support and recommend appropriate resources in response to their needs. Periodically offer support group sessions for no more than 6-12 residents per site on various topics such as stress management, depression, grief, anxiety, or other topics identified through resident feedback. Services are offered based on a schedule of six hours each week.
2. REPORTING:
Contractor is required to maintain a log of activities and attendance sheets for resident participation in any services provided. Invoices are required monthly along with backup documentation.
3. INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS:
• Candidate must provide Licensed Clinical Social Worker licensing as certified by the State of New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, Division of Consumer Affairs.
• Must pass both drug screening and criminal background check.

Volunteers participate in a brief orientation about Lakeview and the students they will meet before joining the classrooms. Volunteer: Community - Dance Chaperones

Do you remember your high school and college dances?  They were fun, weren't they?  Well now, you can relive those days and help folks with developmental disabilities all at the same time!  Arc Mercer hosts a dance once a month on the third or fourth Friday for its consumers, and is looking for volunteers to dance with the consumers, set up for meals, serve meals, assist in the kitchen, or, just plain have fun on the dance floor with the consumers or engage in good conversation with them.  Hours are roughly 5:30 to 9 pm.
