As a Face Painting Volunteer, you will help bring smiles to children's faces by creating fun and colorful face paint designs throughout the event. Volunteers should be friendly, patient, and enjoy interacting with children of all ages while providing a positive and memorable experience. Artistic ability and previous face painting experience are preferred but not required if you are comfortable painting simple designs. Volunteers should also be able to stand for extended periods of time and maintain a clean and organized work area.

I Want To Mow Your Lawn™ is a New Jersey-born nonprofit that provides 100% free lawn and yard care to older adults, military veterans, people living with disabilities, and families going through a difficult stretch.

Founded in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, we have grown into a nationwide movement of more than 2,000 approved volunteers. But Bergen County is where we started—and it is still where we are needed most.

Helping one neighbor, one time. You might mow a lawn, clear leaves, trim a hedge that has grown over a walkway, or remove yard debris.

Most visits take between one and three hours. You will see the request, know the town and the type of work involved, and decide whether it is right for you.

You are never locked in. Help once this summer, once a month, or whenever a nearby request fits your schedule.

We ask for nothing beyond the visit you choose to accept. Even if you can help with only one yard all year, that is one neighbor receiving help they otherwise may not have had.

Many of the neighbors we serve already own a mower, trimmer, or leaf blower—they simply cannot safely operate it anymore. For those visits, all you need is transportation and a willingness to serve.

Volunteers who become regular helpers may also be eligible for equipment support through one of our equipment partners.

We provide volunteer accident insurance coverage and carry general liability coverage for our volunteers. You are not out there entirely on your own.

The docents of the Stone Harbor Museum act as the gateway to the history of Stone
Harbor. Our volunteers work in 3 hour shifts welcoming our visitors and facilitating their
experience throughout our exhibits. On-the-job training is offered, and new docents are paired
with experienced ones for the first few shifts. Residents and non-residents are welcome to
apply.
DOCENT DESCRIPTION
Be at least 16 years of age
Have an interest in Stone Harbor history and in learning something new every day
Have excellent interpersonal communication skills
Can commit to working at least 2 days a month
Answer visitor questions, and serve as a museum liaison
Professional casual attire is expected – hoodies, sweatpants or ripped jeans are
inappropriate
Be comfortable standing for 3 hours
Volunteer expectations may include but are not limited to:
o Welcoming visitors to the Stone Harbor Museum

We are currently seeking a seasoned business professional to assist in the development and facilitation of a career readiness workshop in support of the Jersey Cares Youth Workforce Development Program. As part of this program, participating interns are required to dedicate 120 hours to a nonprofit organization and engage in a minimum of two career readiness workshops.

Recognizing the diverse schedules and geographical locations of our interns across the state, we have identified the need for an innovative approach to workshop delivery. In lieu of traditional in-person sessions, we aim to leverage technology to provide accessible learning opportunities. Specifically, we are requesting workshop developers and facilitators to create slideshows on a topic listed below and record their presentations for our archives. This format enables interns to access and engage with the workshop content at their convenience, aligning with their individual schedules.

We have ongoing projects available for all levels (beginner to advanced), providing registered volunteers with patterns via email. CASA Volunteers are appointed by family court judges to advocate for the best interest of an abused or neglected child during their time in the child welfare system. They are in essence, the voice of the child, in court. CASA Volunteers interview parents, doctors, educators, foster parents, therapists, and anyone else involved in the life of the child they are assigned. Their goal is to provide child-focused reports to the court, which will lead to a speedy, safe, and permanent placement for the child. This is why it is imperative for these volunteers to go through extensive training.

Center for Food Action (CFA) works to prevent hunger and homelessness in northern New Jersey. Volunteers support our weekly food distribution program serving Bergen County families.

Volunteers assist with packing food bags, organizing inventory, preparing distribution setup, and supporting staff during guest service. This is a guest-facing role where punctuality and consistency are essential.

Volunteer Commitment (Required):
CFA is an ongoing volunteer program, and we ask volunteers to commit to one shift per week on the same day, at the same time, and at the same location on a consistent, recurring basis. We do not offer one-time-only individual volunteer opportunities, and all sites are closed on weekends.

Physical Requirements:
Volunteering may involve standing for extended periods, bending and reaching, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, and working in an active distribution environment. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Volunteers must be 16+ and agree to CFA policies and Code of Conduct.

Volunteers assist with packing food boxes, sorting donations, organizing inventory, and preparing pallets for distribution to CFA sites. This role is essential to keeping our distribution sites stocked and operating smoothly.

Volunteer Commitment (Required):
CFA is an ongoing volunteer program, and we ask volunteers to commit to one shift per week on the same day, at the same time, and at the same location on a consistent, recurring basis. We do not offer one-time-only individual volunteer opportunities, and all sites are closed on weekends.

Physical Requirements:
This is a physically active warehouse environment and may involve standing for extended periods, bending and reaching, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, and working safely around warehouse equipment. Closed-toe shoes are required and work boots or steel-toed boots are strongly encouraged.

Center for Food Action (CFA) works to prevent hunger and homelessness in northern New Jersey. Volunteers are essential to our weekly food distribution program serving local families.

Volunteers at our Englewood site assist with food packing, organizing pantry items, preparing distribution tables, and supporting staff during guest-facing food distribution. This is a fast-paced, high-priority role where reliability is extremely important.

Volunteer Commitment (Required):
CFA is an ongoing volunteer program, and we ask volunteers to commit to one shift per week on the same day, at the same time, and at the same location on a consistent, recurring basis. We do not offer one-time-only individual volunteer opportunities, and all sites are closed on weekends.

Physical Requirements:
Volunteering may involve standing for extended periods, bending and reaching, lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, and working in an active distribution environment. Closed-toe shoes are required.

Only one year after its launch, I-Rescue’s footprint will broaden to help alleviate food insecurity by connecting volunteers—who rescue free, fresh and donated food from restaurants and grocery stores—to recipient agencies such as food pantries and shelters that feed communities in need.

I-Rescue was developed through a partnership between Table to Table, Bergen County and the Russell Berrie Foundation.

Joe had a wish that he could find a few people in the area who would be willing to help and the garden's vitality once he moved on.  There is a lot of flexibility in the schedule.  This is an outdoor activity and offers a safe and healthy opportunity.

Ideally it should be someone who loves gardening and/or helping things grow and stay healthy.  Perhaps someone who is retired and/or has off in the early parts of the morning.

Become a Volunteer Literacy Tutor with Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex and Passaic Counties and help adults improve their English language and literacy skills.

Volunteer tutors work with small groups of 3-5 adult learners for at least 2 hours per week, either in person or online. Tutors complete a 10-hour training course (5 sessions, 2 hours each) before being matched with students.

No teaching experience is necessary. Volunteers come from many different professional and personal backgrounds and support adult learners including immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and U.S. citizens.

Even before any disaster or crisis hits, food security can be a significant issue for ALICE®  (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) families and those in poverty. ALICE was already navigating life without a safety net and was one crisis away from financial despair. The government shutdown and suspension of SNAP (food assistance) benefits is that crisis, creating a significant increase in food insecurity while pantries are already at capacity and experiencing shortages.

In response to this impact of the SNAP emergency, United Way is taking action and encouraging people and groups to collect needed items for local food banks/pantries. While Foodstock is a year-round project, we are strongly promoting its expansion during this critical timeframe, given the critical need right now.  This will help ensure ALICE and poverty-level households have enough food while the SNAP program is on hold.

Kindergarten is the start of a formal school environment for many children.  United Way, as part of our United In Care program, encourages school-readiness and early literacy.  Through this effort, we would like each child at one of our many partner preschools to get a card or letter of encouragement that creates excitement about entering kindergarten.

Volunteering for this project is easy and can be done by ANYONE!  Simply make a card or write a short note of support and encouragement for a new kindergartener.  You can include a favorite memory about your own kindergarten experience or perhaps the titles of your favorite children's books.  Please send your card/letter to United Way of Northern New Jersey at P.O. Bergen Volunteers’ Mentoring program provides individuals with one-on-one support. Our staff and volunteers help mentees learn about the resources available within the community while tapping into their strengths to identify and strive towards specific personal improvement goals.

Our long-term mentoring program runs for 18 months and matches volunteers with:

Volunteers enrolled in our long-term program must be at least 21 years old, complete an interview and criminal background check ($17), as well as attend our training session. Ideal candidates are great listeners, non-judgmental, resourceful, and have a generous heart. This year(from Wednesday, October 21, 2026 through Sunday, October 25, 2026), the NFB of NJ will proudly celebrate its 50th Anniversary State Convention — a landmark event bringing together blind individuals, families, professionals, educators, businesses, advocates, and community leaders from across New Jersey and beyond. Therefore, we are seeking volunteers to support us during the state convention. Following are some of the responsibilities of volunteers:

1.   Volunteers will attend a virtual Zoom meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 7:00 PM to get familiar with the sighted guide techniques for the convention.

2.   Volunteers will assist participants during the hotel registration/check in process on October 21 around 4:00 PM and October 22 around noon and direct them to the designated areas for the convention. at the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City.

3.   Volunteers will assist during the hotel check-in process with bus participants on October 21 and October 22.

4.   Volunteers will assist during the hotel check-out process on October 25 and help participants to the designated bus area ensuring attendees depart safely and comfortably. The bus will depart from the hotel around 12:00 PM.

5.   Volunteers will assist with convention registration and distribution of materials during the hotel check-in process.

6.   Volunteers will assist participants with navigating the convention venue, including locating session rooms, meeting areas, and key locations.

7.   Volunteers will support attendees with navigation between sessions and events.

8.   Volunteers will provide sighted guidance to participants when requested, helping them move safely and comfortably on escalators or to the elevators.

9.   Volunteers will respond to general questions and connect participants with convention staff when additional assistance is needed.

10.               Volunteers will report to an assigned supervisor throughout the convention and will communicate concerns, completed tasks, and attendee needs in a timely manner.

The Labor & Literacy Library Program (coordinated through grants and the Plainfield Public Library) is recruiting tutors to be placed in various libraries throughout the state to assist patrons with GED, ESL and/or Digital Literacy.  Plainfield Public Library will provide training and support.

Our Forest Defenders are important volunteers who help us maintain our preserve. Training will be provided.

The TNC Preserve is under invasion and we need your help! Non-native plants have been encroaching into our forest, causing harm to native plants and reducing our biodiversity. Unchecked, these” invasive species” can toxify the soil and shade out native plants. Help remove these pesky plants twice a month with the Forest Defenders!

Learn to identify different invasive species and work with our Land Manager to implement various removal techniques. Forest Defenders is open to adults, teenagers and families. Kids 15 and under must be accompanied by a guardian.

Volunteer Position: Pickup & Delivery Driver

Organization: King's Things Food Pantry

Time Commitment: 3–4 days per week, approximately 2 hours per day

King's Things Food Pantry is seeking a dependable and compassionate volunteer to serve as a Pickup & Delivery Driver. This important role provides support and backup for our current Pickup and Delivery volunteer and helps ensure that food reaches families and individuals experiencing food insecurity throughout our community.

Responsibilities

• Pick up donated food from our Retail Rescue partners and transport it safely to King's Things Food Pantry.

• Weigh incoming food donations and accurately record donation weights.

• Monitor and record temperatures of frozen and refrigerated food items to ensure food safety compliance.

• Complete required reporting and documentation for the Food Bank of South Jersey.

• Deliver weekly food supplies to local low-income housing projects.

• Pick up food and supply donations from area organizations, businesses, and community partners as needed.

• Assist in maintaining an organized and efficient donation intake process.

Requirements

• Ability to safely lift and carry up to 30 pounds.

• Access to a reliable SUV, minivan, or other large vehicle with a covered storage area.

• Valid driver's license and automobile insurance.

• Dependable, organized, and able to work independently.

• Commitment to treating pantry clients, donors, and community partners with kindness and respect.

Impact

This volunteer position plays a vital role in helping King's Things Food Pantry provide nutritious food to neighbors in need. By ensuring that donated food is collected, handled safely, and delivered where it is needed most, you will make a direct and meaningful difference in the lives of local families.

Assist as greeter and admissions volunteer. Must be friendly and mature.  Can handle simple technology for taking payments. Training will be provided.

Women's Rights is looking for volunteers to teach computer classes to Spanish speakers. Classes may be on basic computer use, Microsoft Office for beginners, how to send emails, etc.

Volunteer can design a curriculum around their knowledge base.

The closet is currently open 2 mornings a week. Monday and Tuesday. We are hoping we can get a volunteer, once trained, to open a third day, preferably Thursdays. The closet is located at the Methodist church 2 blocks from the Center in Englewood.

The closet is set up as an opportunity for the women who access services, to “shop” for season appropriate clothing including, outerwear, shoes, purses, and belts. All items available at the Closet are donated.

The volunteers support the shopping experience by asking what the individual is shopping for and directing them to sizes and styles. Offering an opportunity to try things on and provide positive uplifting feedback on what they have chosen.

Items are then “Bagged” before the women leave with their choices.

In essence the volunteers provide a shopping experience the same as if they were actually shopping at a, (high end) retailer.

If you speak Spanish that is a plus! But not required.

Conduct tours of museum, meet and greet visitors. Presentation skills helpful but not necessary.  Volunteers take visiting groups of students, Scouts, senior citizens,  and others, providing them with a tour and explanation of all displays and aircrafts.  The museum's focus is on NJ's contributions to aviation.  

Museum hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm.  Special tours and birthday parties may be booked on Saturdays and Sundays.

We are seeking a volunteer that knows sign language to assist at our Haworth Group Home. 

Spectrum for Living is flexible with a volunteers schedule.  

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, dementia, or another chronic illness is one of the most selfless things we can do, but it can also be exhausting.

Through Jewish Family Service of MetroWest’s Respite program, volunteers support caregivers by visiting their loved ones for 2-3 hours once a week or every other week. Each volunteer is matched with a caregiver and their loved one to provide companionship, socialization, and activities such as reading books, watching movies, or playing games depending on the person’s abilities. This allows the caregiver a break while the care recipient still has safety and supervision.

Friendly Visiting

Friendly Visitors are matched with a homebound older adult to meet with in their home weekly. Volunteers provide conversation, companionship, and socialization opportunities.

Volunteers must submit to a background check. The program commitment is 1 hour once a week and the schedule of meetings is flexible. Volunteers are expected to report their hours monthly through the JFSMW Volunteer Tracking system and submit an update of the visit to the program coordinator via our app.

This program covers Essex, Morris, and surrounding counties, but we have the most need for female volunteers to visit homebound women in Essex County.

Tessie’s Touch brings joy & connection to isolated older adults by matching them with a caring volunteer. Together, they can do activities and excursions in the community. Tessie’s Touch is an extension of our traditional Friendly Visiting program and allows us to go above and beyond for our seniors.

Food Recovery Fellows Volunteer Opportunity (June–December)

Are you looking to stay active, give back, and remain connected to your community? Join Food Recovery Fellows, a six-month service-learning program with Share My Meals.

This unique opportunity is designed for individuals who want to make a meaningful impact through hands-on service and community engagement.

As a Food Recovery Fellow, you’ll work alongside a cohort of peers to support meal recovery routes serving nonprofit partners. Your efforts will help ensure that high-quality surplus food reaches individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Beyond volunteering, you’ll also participate in engaging in-person and virtual sessions exploring topics like food recovery, sustainability, and food security.

Program Details:

Training: Provided prior to the start of service

Volunteer Opportunity – Food Rescue and Delivery

Share My Meals is seeking volunteers to help recover surplus meals and deliver them to those in need. Volunteers pick up meals from a professional kitchen in New Brunswick and deliver them to a nearby nonprofit organization serving individuals in need. The drive between locations is ~20-minutes and includes a quick stop to collect empty containers from the nonprofit before pickup.

Please note: Volunteer opportunities occur on weekday mornings and afternoons.

Volunteers must be 18+, have a valid driver’s license, a personal vehicle with insurance, and a smartphone for the tracking app. Volunteers should be comfortable lifting 20-30lbs.

Training and insulated bags are provided.

A volunteer is needed to assist with light physical labor. Nothing hard or taxing just able to do yard work, assist with simple maintenance tasks and cleanup chores. Their efforts would be directed/coordinated by our experienced staff.

The PFF Walk unites the pulmonary fibrosis (PF) and interstitial lung disease (ILD) community in raising funds and awareness for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Join us as we walk together toward a cure!

Held at Liberty State Park on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the PFF Walk - NYC Metro offers two course options (one or two miles) along a stunning waterfront pathway with views of Lady Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline. After the walk, we invite participants to stay for a celebration with family-friendly activities and light refreshments.

Home Friends is a visitor program for older adults or people with limiting health conditions. This program was created in 1987 in response to a growing need for companionship and support for home-based older adults in Princeton and nearby communities.

Volunteers can do a variety of things during weekly home visits such as: walk together, read and sort mail, exchange stories about life experiences, or pursue mutually shared interests. Some volunteers bring library books, share a movie, help with technology, or work in the garden together.

Home Friends was designed to complement and support, rather than replace, the role of family and paid caregivers.

Once matched with an older adult, we ask that you meet at least one hour a week to build a good relationship that the person can rely on. 

Those who are bilingual or multilingual are greatly encouraged to apply. This opportunity is best suited for individuals over 40 years old and those with flexibility during the work week.

Our Faerie Trail Caretakers are special helpers that make our faerie trail kept looking nice and whimsical, and provide our visitors with a fun passive exhibit to enjoy.

We are seeking volunteers who are interested in helping care for our Faerie trail. Volunteers will be asked to use their artistic and craft skills to maintain this creative exhibit while making sure the fae folk are happy with their forest community. This can be a fun opportunity for families, teens, or adults young or old!

Comfort Zone Camp needs mental health professionals to assist with our camper screening process.  Screening interviews are conducted by phone with the camper’s parent or guardian. They are a series of questions designed to obtain as much information as possible so that we can best serve and supervise the campers during the program, ensuring the timing is right in terms of their grief journey, and help to determine if CZC is an appropriate fit for the camper’s situation. Screenings may last anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. To be eligible, you must have a degree in social work, therapy, counseling, or a related field.
