Volunteer: Volunteer Cabin and Village Leaders for Camp Bright Feathers overnight camp.

Looking for motivated adults who are willing to make a difference in a child's life.

For one week in August, children ages 7-17 from the New Jersey and Philadelphia area can attend Camp Bright Feathers.  Camp Bright Feathers is dedicated to serving children and teens affected by HIV/AIDS and/or violence through a nurturing overnight camp program that focuses on improving the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of all.   Camp Bright Feathers provides a stress-free, fun, recreational camp in the woods for these children that are dealing with an assortment of issues back at home.  It’s a chance for these children to be just kids.

The camp is held at YMCA of the Pines (Formerly known as Camp Ockanickon) which is located in Medford, New Jersey.  The camp sits on over 800 acres in the heart of the pine barons.   The camp has two man made lakes where the children can go swimming, boating, and fishing.  The campers also participate in land sports, arts and crafts, nature, horseback riding, hiking, tractor rides, campfires, talent show, a dance, and karaoke. The older campers get a chance to enjoy the climbing wall, and zip line.  Each dinner has a theme were the campers and staff dress up to win a prize.  Tuesday night the camp is treated to an outside entertainment. Wednesday evening the camp comes together for its talent show.  The camp comes together on Thursday for its special event and finishes the day with the traditional camp dance.  Then on Friday the campers and staff finish with some extra activities and a last meal together.  Volunteers get an opportunity to teach their talents to the campers and introduce some cools things to campers.  Another great things is that you get to do some cool activities with the campers.  Gives you an opportunity to not only teach but you get to enjoy cool activities.  Maybe even an activity you always wanted to try.

The camp is run by a mixture of new and long time veteran counselors.   Almost all of the volunteers use personal vacation time to be at camp.  The staff go through several training (Giving up additional personal free time) to ensure that they can provide a fun and safe time for the campers.  Each individual brings their own individual talents and expertise to help provide a memorable experience for each child.  Now in our 34th year, Camp Bright Feathers has had the pleasure of providing a wonderful experience to over 3,200 campers and look forward to continuing this experience for many more years.

We hope to see you at camp this summer for a life changing event for both you and the campers.

Volunteer: Volunteers Thanking Volunteers: Help Us Spread the Love

Volunteers are the lifeblood of United Way and our programs, sharing their valuable time, talents, expertise, and caring.  We wanted to show our volunteers how much they mean to us and to our community and YOU can help!  Use your artistic talents and imagination to create cards to thank volunteers and let them know how much their volunteer service is valued.

Make one card or many cards - you decide!  Please include a message of thanks and a nice picture, graphic or drawing.  Here are some examples of kind messages of appreciation:

* Thank you for volunteering and showing the world your kind heart.

* Your kindness is the spark that lights up our community.  Thank you for giving your time, energy, and heart so generously - you truly made a difference.

* Volunteers like you prove that the most valuable gift is not money or possessions, but the willingness to serve others with love and compassion.

* Because of your dedication, hope feels closer, smiles shine brighter, and challenges seem smaller.  Thank you for being a beacon of goodness.

* You didn't just give your time - you gave a piece of your heart.  And that's what makes your contribution priceless.

* The world needs more people like you - people who see a need and step forward without hesitation. Thank you for inspiring us all.

* Your selflessness is a reminder that one person's effort can ripple out and change countless lives.  We are deeply grateful for you.

* You are proof that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when they care enough to act. Thank you for being extraordinary.

Please send your cards to us at:

Volunteer: Host a STEM Kit Project!

Discovering the wonder of how something works can be the spark that ignites a child’s enthusiasm for learning. The world of science provides unlimited potential.  In the time it takes to have lunch, employees can create a STEM kit and help light that spark in a child’s imagination!

A STEM kit is comprised of a book, supplemental materials and all of the items necessary to complete an age appropriate science experiment.  STEM kits give teachers, child care workers and parents ready-to-use tools to unlock the possibilities for a child’s future in science, math and related fields.

This is a fun and interesting team-building project and has a long-term positive impact for children in our community.

Volunteer: GIS Coordinator

The Closter Nature Center is seeking a skilled and passionate volunteer to lead the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for our 136-acre preserve. This is a high-impact role that will create a foundational resource for our conservation efforts, ecological data collection, and property management.

The selected volunteer will guide the organization in transitioning from initial concepts to a fully functional mapping system that tracks woodland health, identifies notable features, and protects our vital water resources.  Much of this work can be conducted remotely, but on-site visits for data collection and in-person meetings must be possible for the successful volunteer.

Key Responsibilities

System Design & Setup: Lead the setup of a GIS platform and procedures for system maintenance (The Center currently holds an ArcGIS license but is open to alternative software recommendations).

Ecological Mapping: Develop layers to map forest species, identify invasive growth patterns, and track the progress of ongoing conservation initiatives.

Asset & Resource Management: Denote property boundaries, notable physical features, and critical water resources within the preserve.

Program Oversight: Manage the initial startup phase of the program and establish protocols for long-term data collection.

Training: Provide basic guidance and training to Nature Center volunteers and staff on how to utilize the mapping tools for field data entry and viewing.

Qualifications

Proven experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar mapping systems).

Understanding of data management and spatial analysis.

Interest in ecology, forestry, or environmental conservation.

Ability to work independently and lead a project from the implementation phase.

Strong communication skills to explain technical tools to non-technical volunteers.

Impact

Your work will directly contribute to the "woodland health" of the preserve. By visualizing our ecological data, you will help our team make informed decisions about species protection, resource management, and the overall health of our 136-acre forest for generations to come.

How to Apply

If you are interested in using your technical skills to protect local nature, please reach out to Tom Golodik (click here for email) with a brief summary of your GIS experience and why you’d like to support the Closter Nature Center.
